Rare Earth metals needed to power modern weapons.
China has the world’s largest supply and is ascendant to challenge US supremacy within 5 years. Not having rare Earth metals puts the US at a competitive disadvantage in an arms race. Greenland has the 2nd largest supply.
Therefore, securing Greenland resources is a national security imperative.

All of West Europe should be over the moon happy with the USA taking Greenland in hand in fact ! for such will save millions in West Europe. when China, or as Russia will do, or are forced into War !

What is being exposed is how weak Denmark's hold on Greenland actually is. Neither the US nor Russia view any European claim to Greenland as legitimate.
Erik the Red established Norse colonies in southern Greenland about 986-1000 AD. That creates an association of Greenland with Norse/Scandinavian peoples going back 1,000 years.
Fortification or military force in this exact moment does not establish what is or is not legitimate. We are living in the 21st century with international laws. And the EU says there is no "hot danger" around Greenland as Trump claims, so they had no need to boost their military presence there. Even the USA abandoned the US military bases there and left just one.
Both Russians and Chinese are active in Arctic, but normally, legally and in international waters.
If the EU and Canada are moving soldiers there now, it is rather because of the threats from the USA.

This is about rare materials to make weapons not the land itself its the vast wealth of rare earth it holds .Its been made clear that this is what its about rare earth materials to create advance weapons and regular things like your cell phone.This is about hoarding rare earth materials it won't bring peace it will make a lot of rich people even richer.
Of course it is about all of those things. Greenland's assets are stranded. Denmark has a dark history of exploiting the people who lived there, look it up yourself. Undeveloped lands, are not worth much compared to the cost of the infrastructure to build it up. China and Russia or the USA, Greenland as it is can not have independence. Besides this, their population continues to decline.

Green is freeloading off Nato protection from Denmark that is a Nato country. Nato cannot protect Greenland's border and a war in Europe. They will throw Greenland under the bus if that happens. Many Submarines from mainly Russia and China regularly pass by the Island. A base there will undermine US interests and put the US at risk. Greenland has a very low population and benefits from Denmark's free education and healthcare. That is the only fear in Greenland. A deal has to made regardless before China or Russia builds a military base close to Greenland. Obviously, Putin would do that to thumb his nose at the west.
after a few hundred years the Norse completely abandoned Greenland.
This is about the future, not the present or the past.
Rare earths, minerals, and oil and keeping China and Russia out of our hemisphere.

I say put another large military base on Greenland and have a larger population of military than the population of the island. Then watch the restaurants start showing up and fast-food places, that military can go to and watch the economy take off.
The US will invest billions into Greenland if it is acquired. The money spent there will far exceed the support coming from Denmark. The US may even pay every Greenlander a cash payment, perhaps up to 1 million to each. That 57 billion would still be reasonable as the US will develop the resources, the rare earth's and the oil, valued up to 4 trillions dollars, and will ensure the security of Greenlanders and the western hemisphere, both militarily and economically from China and Russia.
