The transgender high school dropout who gunned down his mother and stepbrother before killing six others at a British Columbia high school has been seen for the first time in recently resurfaced photos posted by his family.

Jesse Van Rootselaar, the 18-year-old ex-student who went on a gun-wielding rampage at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, was spotted straight-faced in several pictures posted by his grandmother on Facebook for his 14th birthday.

“Happy 14th birthday to our grandson Jesse !! Love you always !! XOXO,” the post from August 2021 read.

Van Rootselaar launched the horrifying attack at a private residence in the remote community before continuing the carnage at the high school, where authorities said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said Van Rootselaar was “born a biological male … who approximately six years ago began to transition to female, and identified as female.”

Canadian authorities have said Van Rootselaar underwent mental health treatment.

She killed five people at the school, one in a stairwell and the rest in the library, McDonald said. They victims were three 12-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy, a 13-year-old boy and a 39-year-old woman who worked as a teacher at the school. Police initially had said there were six victims at the school but corrected that to five on Wednesday, saying a woman airlifted to the hospital in critical condition was mistakenly counted as being among the dead.

One of the worst school mass shootings in Canadian history

The news this week about the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada is heartbreaking. An 18-year-old who had a history of mental instability killed family members and then attacked a school, leaving multiple students and a teacher dead before taking their own life.

Before anyone turns this into politics, step back and look at the deeper issue. Our culture keeps telling people they can redefine themselves, reinvent reality, and follow whatever they feel inside. But God already warned what happens when truth is rejected: “they became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened… God gave them over to a reprobate mind” ~Romans 1:21,28.

When identity is built on feelings instead of truth, the mind has no foundation. The pressure builds because the heart cannot carry contradictions forever. Scripture says plainly, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” ~Jeremiah 17:9. Yet society keeps telling hurting people to trust the very thing God warns us not to trust.

This is not about mocking the broken. It is about recognizing the cause. Sin disorders the mind, and a culture that affirms confusion multiplies the damage. Only Christ restores clarity: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” ~John 8:32.

Until people are called to repentance and new birth instead of self-reinvention, tragedies like this will keep happening because the problem is spiritual before it is social.

Sort of like suicidal. And for people in constant pain, with no expectation for things ever getting better, may want to end their life. A sense of hopelessness and inevitability at work in them. They euthanize people over emotional reasons too, even young people.

A family member could with doctors help have someone killed so as to free them to inherit or eliminate burden of a family member. And also financial reasons, like the person no longer wants the family to spend money on them.

It is unusual that a mass shooter kills his own mother. Mass shooters usually target public strangers or specific institutions (schools, work places...), but killing also their own parents is rare.

2.1 MAID requests and outcomes​

In 2024, Health Canada received 22,535 reports of MAID requests. As outlined in Table 2.1a, of these requests, a total of 16,499 people received MAID. The remaining requests did not result in a MAID provision (4,017 died of another cause, 1,327 individuals were assessed as being ineligible and 692 individuals withdrew their request).

Note that it is possible that a person is included in these groups more than once (for example, a person could request MAID, withdraw their request and then apply again and receive it, or make several requests for MAID which are all each deemed ineligible). All MAID requests that were resolved in 2024 were included in this report ("resolved" is defined as a request that results in a MAID provision, is withdrawn, where the individual is found to be ineligible, or where the person has died).

Beginning this year, all non-MAID outcomes (both Track 1 and 2) reported within a given calendar year will be counted in that year's statistics, regardless of when the initial request was made.

For MAID provisions, reporting continues to be based on the year the procedure took place, consistent with previous annual reports. In the event that MAID provisions are reported late, the totals for the relevant prior year are updated accordingly.
