[Galatians 3:13 KJV] "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that hangeth on a tree:"

[Galatians 3:13 NKJV] "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed [is] everyone who hangs on a tree"),"

The new Bibles say that Christ has become a curse, which is different from being made a curse.

Before you try to teach Scripture here on this forum, you should become better acquainted with your own native language. If you cannot see that both are saying the same thing in a different way, you have no business trying to teach here.

Jesus was made(or had become) a curse for us. He became our sin and God punished our sin on Jesus!

Surely what is important is what the original Greek word means. I don't know Greek, but looking at the word translated "being made" or "having become" in Strong's Concordance, I found this:

G1096
γίνομαι
ginomai
ghin'-om-ahee
A prolonged and middle form of a primary verb; to cause to be (“gen” -erate), that is, (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literally, figuratively, intensively, etc.): - arise be assembled, be (come, -fall, -have self), be brought (to pass), (be) come (to pass), continue, be divided, be done, draw, be ended, fall, be finished, follow, be found, be fulfilled, + God forbid, grow, happen, have, be kept, be made, be married, be ordained to be, partake, pass, be performed, be published, require, seem, be showed, X soon as it was, sound, be taken, be turned, use, wax, will, would, be wrought.

I recommend Blue Letter Bible for looking up the original Greek:

"Genemenos", participle form of "Ginomai", a verb meaning "to become". Participles in English get an -ing ending. So, "becoming" or "having become" is correct, and the NKJV translators got it right.

Theologically, "having become a curse for us" is an excellent summation of Penal Substitution and captures Christ's voluntarily taking on the cross. Contrast this with "being made a curse for us", which implies that the cross was imposed on Him externally.

Excellent find. I was deeply troubled and annoyed when I found out about the revised edition, 1881. It seems that all new translations come from it. The corruption is very intentional.

Well the RSV has its many problems But Dougs' issue with Galatians 3:13 is not even an issue that raises a teeny hive!

Ronald, with no disrespect I do see the difference. To " become" something means you are working to become that something. Jesus was "made" a curse by the decree of God the Father to suffer the shame, to make propitiation for the sins of His people.

And this is why I prefer "becoming" (other than the fact it is grammatically more correct): It emphasizes that Jesus willingly took on His people's Curse; it was not imposed on Him by the Father.

Exactly so as Jesus teaches in John 10
17 Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received from My Father.”

This was the express will of the Father, His soul as an offering for sin
24 And when they heard this, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord and said, “Lord, Thou art God who hast made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them,

25 who by the mouth of Thy servant David hast said, ‘Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?

26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ.’

27 For truly against Thy holy child Jesus, whom Thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, had gathered together

28 to do whatsoever Thy hand and Thy counsel determined before to be done.

“Verily, verily I say unto you, he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3 To him the doorkeeper openeth, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out.

4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers.”

6 This parable Jesus spoke unto them, but they understood not what things they were which He spoke unto them.

7 Then said Jesus unto them again, “Verily, verily I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

8 All that ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

9 I am the door; by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

10 The thief cometh not but to steal and to kill and to destroy. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

11 I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep.

12 But he that is a hireling and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming and leaveth the sheep and fleeth; and the wolf catcheth them and scattereth the sheep.

13 The hireling fleeth because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

14 I am the Good Shepherd, and know My sheep and am known by Mine.

15 As the Father knoweth Me, even so know I the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold. Them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold and one Shepherd.

17 Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received from My Father.”

19 There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.

20 And many of them said, “He hath a devil and is mad. Why hear ye him?”

21 Others said, “These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?”

Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground. He hath no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men, a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. And we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

4 Surely He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not his mouth; He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter; and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall declare His generation? For He was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of My people was He stricken.

9 And He made His grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death, because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief. When thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied. By His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He hath poured out His soul unto death. And He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Well if we are talking past and present in english, I would agree. But we are talking Greek here. And becoming here is used of the present tense of the writer, not us. So we should accept that in the English it is past tense.

In the Greek it is aorist Participle Middle, and become is the better English verb. and as it is a participle the "ing" ending on become is called for.

Jesus is One with the Father. And it was the Father's will to do so.

Isaiah 53:6 KJV

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is every one who hangeth on a tree”),

O foolish Galatians! Who hath bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been clearly set forth, crucified among you?

2 This only would I learn of you: Did ye receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3 Are ye so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain — if it be yet in vain?

5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit and worketh miracles among you, doeth He it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

6 Even as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness.”

7 Know ye therefore that those who are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached beforehand the Gospel unto Abraham, saying, “In thee shall all nations be blessed.”

9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written: “Cursed is every one who continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.”

11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.”

12 And the law is not of faith, but “The man who doeth them shall live in them.”

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is every one who hangeth on a tree”),

14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Some very old bible translation on this verse, and all the modern ones too, all say it the same ways, either as made a curse or becoming a curse.
GNV
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the Law, made a curse for us, (for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on tree.)
KJV
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

EXB
Christ ·took away [redeemed us from; bought our freedom from] the curse ·the law put on us [L of the law]. ·He changed places with us and put himself under that curse [L …by becoming a curse for us]. [L For; Because] It is written in the Scriptures, “Anyone ·whose body is displayed [L who is hung] on a tree is cursed [Deut. 21:23; C an executed man’s body was hung on a stake or tree for humiliation and warning; Paul here applies it to Christ’s crucifixion as the curse/judgment for our sin].”

AMPC
Christ purchased our freedom [redeeming us] from the curse (doom) of the Law [and its condemnation] by [Himself] becoming a curse for us, for it is written [in the Scriptures], Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree (is crucified);
