Were the first century Christians patriotic?

Or did they consider themselves to be citizens and ambassadors of a heavenly kingdom?

They were instructed to pray for those in authority and submit to the laws of the land, when those laws did not violate their primary duty to God.

But they refused to burn incense to the Emperor or to proclaim “Caesar is Lord”.

So I did look up the word Patriot and this is what Webster's Dictionary came up with:

The word patriot signifies a person who loves their country and is ready to boldly support and defend it. That meaning has endured since the word's arrival in English in the 16th century, but it has not marched through the years unchallenged.

Ultimately derived from Greek patrios, meaning "of one’s father," patriot entered English via French patriote—meaning "fellow countryman" or "compatriot"—during a time of political unrest in western Europe that was characterized by infighting among fellow countrymen—especially among those of the Protestant and Catholic faiths.

Heb 11:13
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Heb 11:14
For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
Heb 11:15
And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
Heb 11:16
But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

I would consider yes to both in my opinion.

They were Patriotic and Also Ambassadors to the Kingdom.
We have no Emperor nor Ceasar in the United States of America.
We do have someone who is willing to guide this country, One Nation Under God, Indivisible with Liberty and Justice for All.

I know of no other Country on this Earth that follows within those laws, which I believe do not conflict with God's laws.

What do you think?

Early Christian writings, like the anonymous Letter to Diognetus (c. 2nd century), described believers as living in their respective homelands as if they were foreigners.

They participated in local society, but maintained a distinct, counter-cultural community. They refused to serve in the military or police forces, due to their opposition to using lethal weapons.

I don't suppose too many countries would have felt comfortable having converted Jews and Greeks in their military.
During the 2nd Century what Country was considered Christian?
Was it by choice or because they really had nothing of their own other than their faith to defend?

Just trying to put myself in 2nd century , we're talking year 101- 199 AD?
I would think for the most part that they were more chased away than they was accepted by large in any community.
I honestly am not a historian, I have no idea.
I do know that we are living in the 21st century which is a far cry from where we started.

God gave Israel a Homeland. They fought for it, defended it, and died for it. And King David led them in many wars to defend their Nation.
We unfortunately are still living in the world. However, this country I believe chose to be different from other countries of the world.
At least I think that's what it's intention was. Have we strayed? definitely, almost out of the ballpark altogether.
But I believe the Men that fought for this Nation, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, they had a destiny that I believe they was led by God to fulfil while on this earth and in this world.

What do you do with Michael and his Angels who fought the Dragon and his angels?
What do you do with, There was War in Heaven?

Do we just allow the darkness to win?

Do we just stand by and watch our families be destroyed by evil men?

I don't believe that heaven on earth can be achieved until there is a lot of house cleaning done first.
And in my honest opinion, I do believe, that God is cleaning this Country.
I don't know if it will ever be perfect until the Lord himself takes up residence and walks among men, once again.
But I sure do remember Jesus asking in a parable, when he returns, will he find faith on the earth?
I sure hope so.
But like Freedom, I believe you have to fight for Faith as well.
How do you keep the light burning when the world wants to cover it in darkness?

Heb 11:32
And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
Heb 11:33
Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
Heb 11:34
Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

I know the rest of the verses,
However, if not for them, would we be here today?

As Christians?
If David had lost the battle with Goliath, would Jesus have been "The son of David" ?
Mat 1:1
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
And without Jesus there would be no Christians.

So how can we not fight to hold on to what we have until the final battle?

And what we have is the very same faith that Gedeon and Barak, and Samson and even Deborah, and David and Samuel and even the prophets, fought for and held on to and we still have today.
And then there were the crusades, and even divisions and schisms between Catholics and Protestants.

If no one ever stood to fight for faith, would there still be faith upon the earth?

Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Not if we don't defend it.

Thank you @Anchorite
This world doesn't make it easy that's for sure

In the age of grace, we would rather die as a martyr, than kill as a warrior. A martyr is someone who wants to live, but will not kill his enemies to avoid being killed by them.

2 Corinthians 10:4

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.

Jesus told us what to do:

Turn the other cheek.

Love your enemies.

Do good unto those who abuse you.

Pray for those who persecute you.

Resist not an evil man.

Blessed be the peacemakers.

Put away thy sword.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

We fight not against flesh and blood.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

My kingdom is not of this world, thus my servants do not fight.

Thank You @Anchorite

What should we do about Police?
What if they need to shoot a criminal?
Does that mean they are not a Christian?
Hugs
God has provided authorities to protect the good and punish the evil.

A Christian must decide if they can obey God and have a job where they carry lethal weapons and might need to kill someone.

Romans 13:3,4

For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Yes, and those same authorities, are they not soldiers, police, firefighters,
people who are set for the defense of other people?

We do not go to war with those who do good, we go to war to defend our allies from evil.
I know it hasn't always been so, and a lot of times we have been the ones seeking conquest and taking what is not ours.
But there are times that you have to be the "bad guy" in their eyes.

WW2, The US went to War with Our allies to defeat an enemy hellbent on taking over the world.
Were all those who fought to defend freedom, unchristian?
Would you go to the tomb of the unknown and declare that because he fought for peace that he was not a Christian?
And who is to judge who is and who isn't?

Hugs

There are a lot of battles going on on many fronts.
Some are carnal and some are spiritual.
And some spiritual battles you have to fight through the flesh.
Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire in order for a righteous outcome.

In the book of Revelation there is a beast. And that Beast is a system in which we have been held captive.
On one level we know we are spiritually free and saved from the chains of spiritual death.
On the other there is the physical world we still live.
And we are still chained under this system Revelation defines as the Beast.

This is War, Not for our spiritual salvation Christ did that for us.
This War is for the survival of humanity, and we are not fighting this alone.
Before us goes The King of Kings and Lord of Lords and we follow him into battle against evil.

And the Lord himself has chosen who will lead the charge.
God has provided those authorities and we can choose to fight or runaway.
Hugs

Isa 2:4
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Mic 4:3
And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

You are witnessing the systematic destruction of the old guard.
Q

A war against GLOBALISM.
A war to retain SOVEREIGNTY.
DIVIDE THOSE WHO POLICE & SAFEGUARD AGAINST THE PEOPLE THEY ARE SWORN TO PROTECT.
CHAOS.
MAKE THE PEOPLE FIGHT THEMSELVES VS ORIGINAL TARGETS (OLD GUARD).
FAKE NEWS push of racism, fascism, sexism, every other …'ism' etc…. against those seeking to END GLOBALISM in favor of NATIONALISM (pride of heritage and culture - preservation & security/safety) is DESIGNED TO KEEP YOU SUBMISSIVE.

2 Corinthians 10:4

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.
Our spiritual warfare is with the things of the heart and of the mind, and who we follow.
We do not seek to kill, we seek peace.
But you can not have peace without rooting out evil, in our own selves (spiritual) and in the world.
Our weapons:

09/20/2020

Strengthen my faith, Lord. Forgive my sins, so that I may be clean in your righteousness. Make me brave, so I can stand and fight the spiritual battles in my life and in our world. Give me your wisdom and discernment so I won't be caught off guard. Together, Lord, we'll win, because in truth, you already have. While evil still roams, the power of Your name and Your blood rises up to defeat and bring us victory against every evil planned against us. While malicious actions may disturb us, we use the armor of God You have given us to stand firm. You will bring justice in due time for all the harm and needless violence aimed at Your children. Until then, we remain in Your presence, aligned with Your purposes, and we look to You as our Supreme Commander and Protector. Help us to avoid temptation, and deliver us from evil, Lord. You are the Mighty One, the One Who will ultimately bring all evil to light. With You, Jesus, we are safe. Amen.

I would tell you who wrote this, but you would not believe.

Hugs

Globalism pits the one world government against sovereign nations and the individual.

Nationalism pits one nation against another nation.

Christian love blesses and heals, both friend and foe.

@Anchorite's ideology is so profound that they have said,no matter what violence threatens themselves or their family, they will not fight back.

Nor will they call 911.They will hold to their views regarding passive inaction and accept whatever violence befalls.
