One of the primary purposes of Romans 7 is to show that the old sin-nature still existed in those who had a relationship with God during both the faith/covenant and law/obedience dispensations but the sin- nature no longer existed in born again believers.
Also during those times the covenants could not remove the sin-nature.
Paul has already shown that all mankind had the old sin nature derived from Adam who received it from the devil, Romans 5.
In essence that meant the devil was their father, John 8:44
"ye are of your father the devil."

Paul includes the Jews to show them how the sin nature affected their ability to function under law.

The ultimate purpose of Romans 7 is to show the born again believer that the old sin nature does not exist in grace.
Under grace they still have the same mind that was formerly in union/marriage with the sin-nature.
Not a single thing happened to their minds.
There in lies the trouble for the believer, they will need a new mind that is compatible with the new nature.
The old mind had to suppress the old nature, that is why God gave the law to help them control their nature.
The new nature does not need to be suppressed or controlled, it needs a mind that is compatible.
Without old mind suppressing the old nature we find the word Paul uses reprobate.
That is a mind that is totally compatible with the sin nature.
The new Christ in you nature does not need to be suppressed or controlled.
The mind of the believer needs to know this or they will still control the new nature, can you see the problem yet.
Most believers think they would never do this but it happens every day.
Until the believer sees their need to yield their mind to the Holy Spirit (Romans 6) to be taught about this life they have in Christ, they will control their new nature.
Have you ever wondered why religion works the way it does, it really is a simple matter that scriptures point out again and again. Paul the progenitor of the Grace Gospel tells us to "let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus."
When you read the Epistles of Paul you are reading the mind of Christ.

Yep, one day we will be given that new mind when we receive our glorified bodies!

1 Corinthians 15:42-52

42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:

43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:

44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.

48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

i believe you all are looking at this the wrong way. according to scripture we are new creatures in Christ. we are not of the flesh but of the spirit. the problem arises because the fleshly desires have become habit/ingrained in us. which is why God is always working with us to make us perfect. the law was originally there to show us sin so we could avoid it. which is one reason the law was written in the hearts of all born again believers. remember with Christ we have His righteousness, holiness, peace, and ect. it is not our own so even if we mess up we always remain righteous and holy. many forget or do not understand this concept which keep many christians from enjoying the benefits.

you say we need a new mind that is compatible with the new nature but according to scripture we already have the mind of Christ. how can we get a better or more compatible mind then Christ's mind?

God bless

Thanks for commenting, yes new creation was the theme.
The only place a Christian will ever be perfect is in spirit, they are perfect now in spirit.
In another place Paul says allow this mind to be in you.
We do not receive the mind of Christ automatically, take a look around the world at Christianity, can you honestly say we have the mind of Christ.

yes i do know we have the mind of Christ automatically. but knowing and believing are two different things. just because i know and believe something does not mean you do. for example, scripture tell us we are a new creature but many people think it is a state we need to achieve instead of already received. the same can be said of authority, righteousness, holiness, and ect. just because we have all these and more does not mean we use or recognize us as having them. all these things were given to us unconditionally. you make it sound like i need to earn them. i cannot earn Christ's righteousness or authority or peace or anything else. but not recognizing us as having His gifts just won't work for us. this is where you are. you are waiting for it to come to you instead of realizing you have had it from the beginning. quit standing on the side lines and step into your heritage that God gave you.

God bless

We serve the law of God with our minds, and the law of Sin with our members.
It's a war.

From Romans 7:21. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
25...."So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin."

Thanks, this helps me in my understanding of having the "mind of Christ". I understand the "law of God" as having faith in Christ, and being made the righteousness of God in Him (spiritually speaking).

Our mortal flesh (the old man) is nothing but unrighteous! If we check the Greek for the word "do" in verse 19, we see the first use of "do" is the Greek word "poieo", meaning "a single act". The next "do" is the Greek word "prasso" which is "to perform repeatedly or habitually". Paul is teaching the same thing said in Isaiah 64:6, even our "righteousnesses" are as filthy rags. In our flesh is no righteousness at all. It is the sin nature, and we are incapable of even one single act of righteousness from our mortal flesh.

Romans 7:17-19
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

Yes it is available to the believer to accept, just as grace.
