Why do we call the Russian invasion and acquisition of Crimea an ‘annexation’?
It does not matter what you call it. The real issue -- which Trump brought to the forefront -- is that Russia calmly grabbed Crimea
while Obama stood by dithering,
as did all of Western Europe and NATO. That was a shameful display of cowardice, and Putin knew exactly what he was doing.
Indeed, had Putin chosen to do so (before the Trump presidency) he could have probably marched into Western Europe without any resistance, and made it into Greater Russia.
What Trump was implying is that had he been the President, Putin would have been immediately challenged and Russian troops would have been prevented from annexing Crimea.
We should not forget what the Russians did to the Crimean Tatars in order to grab this piece of territory. They also did the same thing with many other former Soviet republics.
