When two angels visited Sodom in preparation for its destruction they met Lot.

The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.”

They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.”

But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
Genesis 19:1-3 ESV

The fact that Lot was sitting in the gate tells us something of his status in the city. The gate was where important business was carried out and the important men in the city were frequently found there.

The first mention of a city gate is found in Genesis 19:1. It was at the gate of Sodom that Abraham’s nephew, Lot, greeted the angelic visitors to his city. Lot was there with other leading men of the city, either discussing the day’s issues or engaging in important civic business.

The fact that Lot was sitting there shows that the people of Sodom honored him and regarded him as one of their leading citizens.

The people of Sodom had previously been described as being wicked.

Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD.
Genesis 13:13 ESV

Why would such wicked people choose someone like Lot to be one of their leaders? Some have suggested that Lot won their approval by compromising his standards of right and wrong and accepting their values. This idea is contradicted by what Peter said about Lot.

As that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard.
2 Peter 2:8 ESV

Surely a man who was torments over their deeds wouldn’t live as they did.

I believe their real motivation for honoring Lot is found in Genesis 14. Sodom was defeated in battle and many of its resident, including Lot, were taken captive.

So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way.
Genesis 14:11,12 ESV

When Abraham heard of this he gathered his forces and rescued Lot, freeing the other captives from Sodom in the process.

Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people.
Genesis 14:16 ESV

The people of Sodom realized they had been rescued only because Lot lived in their city, so they promoted him to a position of leadership to ensure that he would stay and so that they could count on Abraham’s help when they needed it. When Lot tried to protect the angels from the men of Sodom they revealed their true feelings toward him.

And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down.
Genesis 19:9 ESV

With these words they sealed their fate and assured the destruction of Sodom.

GINOLJC, thank for the topic. Just because Lot was important, that do not mean he was in charge, because they had a king over them, both cities. but I think what you're getting at is what was the same thing with Joseph, and Daniel. who was righteous men that rose to power in wicked kingdoms. if this is correct as to what you're speaking about. God alway have his righteous in place where the wicked can change their way by having a good example to phyically see, and go by. God never give the wicked a chance to say... "well I didn't know". oh yes you know, because God will send or put someone in your path for correctness so that you may have a chance to repent, before destruction comes.

God always warns before he convicts, Ezekiel 33:33 "And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them."

Although you have some interesting points here, you based them on assumptions. From where in the Bible can you confirm Lot's prominence in the city of Sodom? You said it yourself that he was deeply offended by the continuously egregious acts of the Sodomites. This is something that he wouldn't disguise to such a degree, that they would honour him to the extent that you claim. He clearly did not represent them in any way, qualifying him to be a leader of its people, clearly!
You may be on to something with the Sodomites recognizing a lucky charm in having Lot around, due to their recapturing by Abraham, possibly. But I'd never be dogmatic about it, for the Biblical substantiation is just not there. You've inferred everything that you've concluded.

no. the fate of Sodom was sealed when the Lord went to see what was what in Sodom with the two angels. Lot was spared because of Abrahams pursuit of the Lord's Mercy for Lot's sake. but Sodom was already history in God's sight.

but did not the Lord go to see the cry aganist city? for Abraham bargan with the Lord from 50 men to be found right in the city to ten. so if, if, if, ten was found then the city would be spared. and if is a condiction, and not an already made up verdict yet. but when the angels got there, and was in Lot house the ten was not found because all of the men of city came to Lot house, and was found not worthy.

If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it.
Jeremiah 18:7,8 ESV

When Lot rebuked the men of Sodom for their attack on the angels, he was giving them a final opportunity to repent. If enough of them had done so to raise the number of righteous people in the city to ten, God would have spared the city, fulfilling his promise to Abraham. They refused and the judgment on their city became irrevocable.

Words can't express how presumptuous that you're being, trying to qualify your point. You're showing extremely bad exegetical habits.

How is my exegesis wrong?
