I really do not know what an hireling is. This passage makes me think of John 12:4-6 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, [5] Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? [6] This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Earlier in the passage of ‘an hireling’ is

Yes . They preach things only for a means of wealth . To keep numbers large and incomes big .
They are hirelings , they do as they do for the sake of financial gain or to be seen of men and praised of men .

I think Paul describes a hireling pretty well in 2Tim. 4:3-4,

A true seasoned leader of any group would preach and behold on BOTH the severity and the goodness of GOD .
They will omit neither one .
They will expound on both .

For a man who will not teach nor behold the severity o GOD , is a man
that will also preach a false goodness . And one who wont behold the goodness of GOD , wont point to Christ either .
An example of a false goodness is , OH GOD IS LOVE , He would never send anyone to hell
or its okay to sin GOD understands . SEE that is a false goodness and its due to a lack of beholding the true severity of GOD .
And on the other foot , we have those like westboro baptist who only preach severity and even that is off
cause they never point to Christ , instead they condemn and even sing songs about folks going to hell .
WE MUST both behold and speak on the goodness and severity of GOD .

Heres a good example about a man who is preaching a false goodness and where this false goodness has also
led many folks within those churches.
In romans paul even tells them or do you not behold the goodness of GOD which leadeth to repentance .
Yet today their version seems to lead folks not to repentance , but rather ACCEPTANCE of sin .
Instead of leading them to the true Christ , they lead them to another jesus . One which accepts sin .
And we all know JESUS is not the ministir of sin . HE came to set us free from sin and not to feel free TO SIN .

What is ‘an hireling’?

A hireling is one who has only his own self-interest at heart, and is focused primarily on the monetary rewards of doing something. The hireling prophet Balaam is a good example in the book of Numbers. Elisha's servant Gehazi is another good example.

Many employees in businesses have the same attitude towards their work. They will work as little as possible, extend their breaks as much as possible, and do only enough to keep from being fired. It gets even worse when people work for governments and for public school systems. They believe the world owes them a living.

When pastors are hired as employees of churches, they tend to become hirelings. They forget what the ministry of a pastor or shepherd really is. And having one man becomes the pastor of a whole congregation simply is unbiblical and unfair. That is why God required a plurality of pastor/elder/bishops in all the churches.
