Ecclesiastes 10/2

"A wise man's heart is at his right, but a fools heart at his left"

Is this the origin of the politcal labels known as right and left.....not trying to start an arguement because that is pointless...just wondering since eveything has a beginning.

Jesus said to fish out of the 'right' side... of the boat (John 21:6).

Don't know how far back in history in the middleast that the right-hand has been associated with righteousness, but the custom is still active today. Man's politics doesn't really apply.

Even when I was in the military in the '70's in the middleast, radical Islam still believed in cutting off one's right hand for stealing. They even had a custom of putting food up to their mouths using the right hand, but doing one's private business with the left hand. So a thief who had no right hand became as an outcast to the society, since they were forced to eat and do their private business with the same hand.

If memory serves me correctly, the terms left and right in respect to politics came about as a result of the French Revolution. I don't know the names and specifics, but supporters on one side were more radical in the sense of wanting to change the status quo (the left) while those on the right were more intent on holding to the French constitution, etc. It was all relative to where whomever was sitting. The terms just stuck with us after that.

There are numerous verses in the Bible where it says not to swerve too far to the right or left (paraphrasing). Deuteronomy 5:32 is one such example.

Veteran, I don't know that the right hand was so much associated with righteousness, as it was power. The right hand was the average person's dominant hand. Lefties were considered weird and even evil by some cultures (sorry lefties). I remember eating with my left hand one time as a young child, and I was asked why I was doing that. I cannot recall if it was my great grandmother or grandmother, but the left-hand was viewed superstitiously for a long time.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

Liberty. Equality. Fraternity.

This was the slogan of the French Revolution, but the error was in the notion that the first two are so closely related. Equality should refer to equal standing under the law - Black the same as white, poor the same as rich, etc - but equality has come to be understood as meaning absolute equality of everything. I'm not defending French aristocrats, but the Bible is very clear about returning evil for evil. It just doesn't work.

The Bible demonstrates the correct application of equality - we are all sinners. It never distinguishes from lesser sinners to major sinners. We all break the law, so we needed Jesus to take the punishment for us and give us a way.
