First off,
Those that don't go to church regularly are going to have zero knowledge on this subject. If you dont go, then you dont know.
But of those that do go....
How is it for you when church staff changes?
When senior pastor changes happen, the whole culture of the church changes. (Of course)
But,
Most of the associate pastors usually have a change roughly every 2 years. Not always but that's the usual. Especially in Methodist churches (which are done by a central leadership)
But a lot of independent churches dont have that sort of thing. They hire and change associate pastors in an ongoing basis. (Including SBC churches that even though they are convention members each church is an independent church)
Usually the Youth Pastor changes the most....sometimes the children's Pastor.....occassionally the music director.
Then there's the new emerging role of executive associate pastor.....one that manages the staff and other pastors so the senior pastor doesn't have to be the "bad guy" by having difficult conversations with the staff.
My church has had just such a change. The executive pastor has changed. Now the old one has gone on to another job....no biggie. But he was anything but traditionally trained in a seminary....and it showed. That doesn't mean that he wasn't good at his job. Far from it, he was one of the best I've ever seen at it.
His replacement is very much seminary trained....a very dry, and accountant type.....the former was a sports coach. Great at forming up groups and teams....making people feel needed, wanted, and to be a part of something. The new one.....uhhhh....dont know much about him except that the senior pastor wanted him on staff. (Maybe to put some more regulated policies and procedures in place for everyone)
Meh, i dont care much about any of it because I really dont rely much on pastoral staff for much other than for them to do their jobs on Sunday and other times in the week but I dont personally have a lot to do with them otherwise. I just dont want to take up their time. (They work insane hours every week)
My Sister-in-law was once in college for a counseling degree. She worked at a church as a counselor as an externship. So she had a working/friendship relationship with their youth pastor....he moved out of ministry work because he was an idiot. Not very professional in his dealings. (Common) She got soured on church as a result.
BUT
How well do you handle staff changes?
Does the pastoral staff have a relationship with you?
Is it positive or negative?
What's your take?
