Certainly a sense of purpose is a great comfort for those who find it in their suffering.
Seeing a greater purpose in suffering can make a horrible situation bearable. And the opposite is also true: Senseless suffering makes things worse.

Did the child's father convince him that God had chosen him, or did the child come up with that himself? If this was the father's way of helping his child see purpose and meaning in the situation (and in doing so, give him faith and strength to endure it), is it ethical?

Is this simply an acknowledgement of God's sovereignty over all circumstances, or is it (as suggested by a few on this thread) slanderous of God?

Even back in OT, God curses the children of His enemies! He doesn't have to ask permission!

* There's a "Favorite Psalms" thread; I'll put you down for Psalm 137:9.

Hard to say, since we weren't there.
But the father seems genuinely surprised by the faith of this little one.
The boy probably heard several things from adults.
But that was the one he chose to cling to.

Yep, the consequences of being God's enemy can be utter horror! Israel found that out. Like when God drowned all on Earth but 8 and burned Sodom alive, "making them an example".
