do you think students should be allowed to do homework in school detention instead of punishment essays and lines ?

A couple of weeks ago i had an after school detention as a punishment for non stop messing about in class, it lasted 1 hour 30 minutes, this did not include the 5 minutes to get to the detention room, once there we had to stand behind our desks while the detention teacher checked our school uniforms, we had to have our collars done up, ties neat and tidy and blazer done up, then the teacher took the register and gave out the work, which took another 10 minutes, i had to write a punishment essay on school rules and punishments, other students also were set essays , and some had to write lines, only then did the clock start for the 1 and a half hours, i got out of school 1 hour 50 minutes late, when i got home it was time for dinner, then straight into homework, so basically i had no freetime for myself, my question is if we could do homework in detention we could still have some freetime when we get home what do you think ?

Discipline is essential. Your question shouldn't be: Why can't you use detention time to do homework (nullifying the punishment), it should be: What lessen have I learned from the punishment (which is not to mess around in class) and to learn self discipline, self control, obedience, respect towards the teacher and other classmates. Messing around disrupts the class, interupts the teacher's effort to teach you and the students something. Whether you think it's valuable or not, be still, pay attention and conform to the plan, try to learn something. I know, some teachers are boring, some should not be teachers. It's great to get a good one that inspires.
School is trying to prepare you for life. It is a series of mental exercises, information download, comprehending it, storing it, learning how to gather it through research and study, how to organize it, summarize it intelligibly, give it back, how to communicate, solve problems, find your inner strengths and learn to use them to be creative and a productive person through lots of work and testing. . If you goof off and mess around on a future job, guess what, they might be merciful, call you in the office and give you a warning to stop, a second chance; but they might not and just fire you for not taking your job seriously and not being productive!
The pursuit of happiness requires discipline. So there is a time to be still, quiet, focus and learn, a time to mess around and have fun. Yes, absolutely, you must have fun, go on adventures, play games, sports.
"There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace."
Ecc. 3:1-8
