Well it begins with my birth in 1988. Prior to that, I don't recall what I was up to; I suspect it wasn't too important. Anyways, I grew up in a non-religious home. Everyone believed in God, but none of us went to church or ever talked about religion.

In 1998, my little brother died. That event changed the course of my life and my family in many ways. Because of the circumstances surrounding my brother's death, my grandparents took custody of me and we all began going to a Baptist church within a few months.

Truthfully, I hated church. I much preferred sleeping in on Sundays. I eventually told my grandparents that I didn't want to attend anymore and they eventually stopped forcing me to go. They eventually stopped going as well.

During my teenage years, I didn't think about God or religion much, if at all. That was until I began attending a private Christian school; I still didn't really buy any of it. A few years later, after I was out of school, the New Atheist movement headed by people like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris, began picking up steam in the cultural zeitgeist. I thought their arguments were far more compelling than any arguments made by any Christian pastor.

From then on out, I considered myself an agnostic. The transition from agnostic to Christian was a difficult one. I was involved in a bad car accident in late 2022. With five herniated disks in my neck and a fractured sternum, I wasn't able to do much for several months.

I began drinking hard liquor in March of 2023. I can't say I didn't enjoy it. It certainly seemed like the answer to the problems I was facing in life. This lead to a spiral into nihilism; a belief that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Well it got to the point that I was drinking every night just to feel normal. I realized that wasn't something I could do long term, and so I stopped. Which is much harder than you think it will be. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about it.

Thankfully I had some good people on my side. Both @Angelina and @Debp helped me in more ways than I can count. I'll be forever grateful for their help and friendship.

In many ways, I was my own biggest obstacle. In my pursuit for happiness and contentment, I did not find it in anything this world has to offer. A relationship with the Lord is the only thing that made me feel content and whole again.

Looking back on my life, I can see the times in which I was being nudged in that direction, but I just wasn't ready. Just a few days ago, I decided it's now or never; I think the timing felt right. So I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and saviour.

And right now I'm enjoying some chamomile tea, oh yes. :coff

Oh that's just beautiful man. It bought a tear to my eye until the last sentence made me laugh.
I was atheist then became agnostic before turning the God so I really feel your story and enjoyed reading it.

I fell for the new atheist movement as well. The four horsemen, Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris and some other guy. I was full atheist for a while before becoming agnostic and finally turning to God.

Is there any particular arguments that made you finally believe in God?
My two favourite arguments are these

One is known as the watchmakers arguments. It says that anything that is ordered, such as a watch, must of been made by an intelligent being, the watchmaker. You can't make a watch from an explosion, only from intelligence. Same with a computer or anything that is ordered, it's made by an intelligent being. And so we see an ordered universe, earth and life so its very unlikely that it came from a random big bang and much more likely it came from an intelligent being, God.

My second favourite argument is that everywhere we look we see that life comes from life. A baby animal comes from the procreation of two other animals. A tree comes from a seed of another tree. We never see life coming from non-life. So it's highly unlikely that the first life just began randomly without life, and much more likely that it began from another life source, God.

There are other arguments, the moral argument is good too but those two are my favourites ones that really made me think and helped me in my path to God.

May Gods peace and grace
be with you my friend

the New Atheist movement ... arguments were far more compelling than any arguments made by any Christian pastor.

The best apology to that is the enemies of God have arguments, whereas God's children have experiences.

I was my own biggest obstacle.

This is always the experience; the ego blocks spiritual growth and connection with God. It is the Original Sin. Humans want to be their own God. It takes genuine humility to realize: (1). We aint God; (2). Need a savior and lord of our lives.

my little brother died.

drinking every night

A lot of testimonies are that people hit wrong bottom before they rebound, repent and turn toward the light. I'm reminded of a quip that politicians always do the right thing- after they've run out of options. People are like that in general and as it applies to religion.

I have difficulty with prayer. I find myself struggling to begin because I just don't know what to say or how to say it. Any help with this, as well as advice about anything else, would be greatly appreciated.
Hello again Riven, here's another practical resource that I think you will both enjoy and find useful concerning prayer. It's a 6-part teaching series by Dr. R. C. Sproul (1939-2018 .. he was a Presbyterian theologian and pastor), who takes a close look at various aspects of prayer, which include, How to Pray, Why We Pray, Adoration, Confession, The Lord's Prayer (2 parts) .. Matthew 6:9-13.

You can find the series for free on YouTube, beginning here: How to Pray

Or you can go to Ligonier.org (Dr. Sproul's online ministry home) and pay $5 to buy and download the entire series as a whole (so that you don't have to dig up the various parts of it on YouTube): Prayer: R.C. Sproul - Download, Teaching Series | Ligonier Ministries Store

Each part of this 6-part series on prayer is about 23 minutes long because they were originally created to be broadcast on the radio (and sometimes on tv), just FYI. Of course his broadcast ministry is easier to find 24/7 online today at: www.renewingyourmind.org.

God bless you!!

--Papa Smurf
p.s. - Dr. Sproul delves into a bit of the ACTS prayer model in this series, and he also talks about how to use The Lord's Prayer as a model for praying, too.

Years ago I used to get Dr. Sproul's free ministry magazine. Also Dr. David Jeremiah offers a free devotional magazine with interesting articles and brief devotionals at the end. I did like those short devotionals alot.

Ironically, it was the lack of an argument that brought me to this point. For years, I only focused on the arguments. But it's sort of like living your life based on statistics; you can do it, but it's not very satisfying.

I still enjoy listening to Hitchens. He was my favorite because he made me laugh during his debates with Christians. He had this wit about him. I wish he was still around. Dawkins was a bit dry and far hostile towards Christianity than Hitchens was. When asked if given the opportunity, would Hitchens remove Christianity from this world, he famously said no. He said he didn't know why wouldn't do it, but that he wouldn't do it.

It took me many years to see why Christianity is important for a person's well being. Today, Dawkins has softened his position arms calls himself a "cultural Christian". In other words, he likes what the Christian faith does to society, but he himself doesn't want to commit to it. Which I find somewhat selfish because he's benefiting over off of the hard and sacrifice that real Christians make and have made over the centuries to make that possible.

In the end, I kind of shifted gears and began focusing on the why instead of the how. It's very easy to get caught snagged on how talking snakes could exist or something like that and dismiss it all as nonsense. When you focus on why Christianity exists, or why it's beneficial for human beings, you begin to see it in a different way.

All that being said, the question of why is there something rather than nothing, has yet to be answered by science. Even Hitchens admitted it was a good question. Which it is. :funlaugh2

This reminds me of a provocative book I read decades ago called Descartes Error. While we pride ourselves on our intellect and even define ourselves as a rational animal, we are not emotionless robots. We are emotional and serve an emotional God.

In the book, there is a story of a man who suffered a remarkable brain injury by a rail spike exploding from the ground and removing that part of the brain that processes emotions. He lived for decades after. However, he had trouble making simple decisions like when to schedule an appointment. There was no rationale reason to pick one time slot that was open in his calendar from another. Such a simple example shows how our emotions drive our preferences and hence our decision-making to live normal, healthy lives.

Satisfaction comes in large part from our emotional state. Sure, we can set a goal and achieve it, which superficially ought to be the cause and effect of satisfaction. However, if the end is divorced from what satisfies us emotionally, we will not be satisfied even when we achieve our set goals. It's not rational to deny our emotional nature.

The Bible uses the term joy. We are made to live joyfully while the world pushes happiness. The root word is derived from happenstance, which is circumstances. Sure, we should aim to improve our circumstances as general principle as individuals and as a species. However, our circumstances are not fully in our control. Joy, by contrast, is an emotional state independent of our ever changing circumstances.

In the end, I kind of shifted gears and began focusing on the why instead of the how.

I learned early on in school that the why of life is the deepest questions that only those smart enough take on, like philosophers, theologians and politicians.

All that being said, the question of why is there something rather than nothing, has yet to be answered by science. Even Hitchens admitted it was a good question. Which it is.

Science answers the question HOW. Religion answers the question WHY.

Science can explain HOW the universe began but not WHY. The reason why is explained in the first 4 words of the Bible, In the beginning, God.

I'm happy to hear this! A long time ago, I was agnostic due to Darwinian Evolution and the question of other religions. It didn't last long but I enjoyed a deep faith as a result of asking so many questions back then.

Im so full of joy that you "entered the chat"! Welcome to faith!

I mean, I have some basic knowledge I picked up during my time in a Christian school. But the thing is, I've never actually lived as a Christian before; so much of this is new to me.

I have difficulty with prayer. I find myself struggling to begin because I just don't know what to say or how to say it. Any help with this, as well as advice about anything else, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. :gd
Riven- amazing! Welcome brother!
Prayer goes better for me when I begin with thanksgiving. When I start out with praise and thanks it is crazy how much perspective I get. Just look around you at the things you take for granted- we all do. .. the blue sky- the breeze- the trees- the birds singing- food- soap! anything but most of all how He sent His Son for us- As I do that, suddenly some of my problems seems to go away or become smaller.
From them on- let it spill. He hears you- you don't have to worry about how to say it- just be respectful and tell him all that is in you. If you're thinking it- He already knows it. so just be totally honest- an open book! admit your failings and ask for His help.
He wants you to draw close to Him each day.
Blessings!!

Reading the gospels, especially gospel of John, is a good start for a new Christian. Eventually read the entire Bible, in a study Bible format, with helpful commentary and notes. Ask your pastor to guide you.

Prayer is talking to God as a dear friend and father.

Thank Him constantly for your life, health, and other blessings.

Read the Psalms for nice prayer models.

Pray for help when needed.

Pray for greater understanding of spiritual things.

Pray for your friends and family to be happy, healthy, holy.

Pray for your nation and leaders.

Pray for world peace.

Pray for all people to be drawn to Christ for salvation.

Pray for boldness to share your faith with others.

That is a great confession to make and a great place to begin!

I recommend attending a church dedicated to the Bible. Calvary Chapels are a good choice because they go through the Bible chronologically with little or no other agenda. But more importantly, this is all personal between you and God, so plan and schedule a daily time with just you (or you and a spouse) with Him and His word. Any questions you have in doing so, you should ask of Him...and be very careful in asking anyone else, if at all. Better to limit interaction with others to conversation rather than questions--biblically there is One mediator between God and people, Jesus Christ. When you get further along, there are also those who Christ uses and speaks through--but don't get ahead of yourself, there are dangers, namely those who are falsely acting without Christ's authority--even many of the cloth.

God bless you and keep you!

It's a struggle. I could write a book about it. I think I would call it "The Mind That Never Sleeps".

Finally got this post working...had to restart my tablet.

Riven try to keep things simple, especially as a new believer. Although I still like to keep things simple too.

Read the Bible, pray and trust the Lord. The Bible has many promises to us such as "cast your cares upon Him for He cares for you." Don't be anxious but pray about everything and you will have the peace of God.

There are many different voices on a forum like this so learn to discern which ones are correct and which ones to avoid.

Hmm :IDK:There was never any doubt that there would be difficulties. It comes with the territory, but thankfully you have me and plenty of others here who are willing to walk with you on that path. Kind of exciting, really! :clmSmlx

@Riven If you need some basics about the faith, Dr David Jeremiah is a sound Bible teacher. You can find him on YouTube.

This is interesting...also Dr Jeremiah says 50 Bibles are sold per minute in the USA.
