For sixteen years Smith Wigglesworth preached that he had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, when in fact he had only received the anointing of the spirit. He explains that it was though he was on the outside of the Garden of Eden looking in. But after he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, it was as though he had regained access to the Garden of Eden, with the Holy Spirit serving as the fiery sword keeping evil out while he tasted of the good of the Lord. Smith Wigglesworth believed that there were three variations of tongues:

1. The initial tongues giving upon baptism.
2. The tongues spoken in prayer not meant to be interpreted.
3. The tongues given out with a purpose of being interpreted to your native language.

Smith Wigglesworth reminds his audience that since he left their presence, they do not know what he has done. He may have lost anointing or favor with God. He might be like people who have lived holy lives, preached sanctification, and their initial tongues were helpful; but they are now in a backslidden condition… A life not worthy of the language… Something got in the way. They have kept their language, but have lost their zeal and fire. Wherefore Smith Wigglesworth re-emphasizes…

1. Go two days without growing… You have lost your vision!
2. Go a week without growing… You are a backslider!

Smith Wigglesworth encourages people to grow daily into the kingdom. He said that he would rather hear Christians who knew not the power of God, but were growing; than hear people who received the fullness of the power of God, and were now self-satisfied. Smith Wigglesworth also reemphasizes that, like the apostles, he did very little for the kingdom of God before he got the Holy Ghost. Smith Wigglesworth also emphasizes that the Giver is to be received before the gifts. Salvation always precedes sanctification, and sanctification will always precede the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Sanctification prepares the body for the Holy Spirit, and when the body is rightly prepared for the Holy Spirit, and then it is the work of Jesus to baptize with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit then makes Jesus king in your life; you regard him as Lord and Master over all things, and you become submissive to him in all things. You are not afraid to say, “You are mine! I love you!”

The difference between those being led by the Holy Spirit and those who are deceived by Satan is joy, gladness, and a good countenance instead of sadness, sorrow, and depression. Jesus comes with joy into the soul and lifts you higher and higher, it is the spirit who gives light. When satanic power begins to rule; then there is weariness, then people’s faces are like a tragedy, and then their eyes glare as though they have passed through a terrible trial. You are always right to test the spirits (1 John 4:1), if not you will be sure to be caught napping.

Have you ever noticed that the charismatic tongues speaking all sounds the same, like a variation of Aramaic? Some of it is outright gibberish or nonsense syllables. This stuff cannot be biblical speaking in tongues. I myself spoke in tongues like that for decades, but I no longer do it.

The baptism or anointing of the Holy Spirit occurs when a person gets saved, born again. It is not a second blessing.

I do not recommenced anyone get taught the Holy Spirit, tongues, gifts, miracles, prosperity, or anything like that. Whatever your gift it is from the Grace of God and ought to produce fruit and edification in the house of God. If someone has taught you to speak in tongues it is indeed outright gibberish and nonsense syllables. It is like trying to play the piano when it is obvious the ability is not there.

The baptism or anointing of the Holy Spirit occurs when a person gets saved, born again??? Then why do are not all Christians producing spiritual fruit? If someone is anointed in the gift of piano playing is it not thanking God for them the proper thing to do? Does that mean all Christians should be in church playing the piano? It is a grave mistake to teach all people get the same gifts when Baptized in the Holy Ghost. Even on the day of Pentecost the tongues were different out of each believer.

7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. - Acts 2

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. - 1 Corinthians 1:12

If the Lord has given you a gift focus on that gift and do not be desirous of other peoples gifts. In this day and time it is a great comparison. Even if someone is blessed with more materially a jealousy is easily developed and causes people to lose focus on what they do have.

but what do you do if you have someone say God is giving me these visions of things that are gonna happen in the future?

What if said things are just probable chance to call out to happen?
How often as that happened? - Coincidence.
Do you just go willy-nilly and believe them?

I could try to come up with other examples - but i dont think anyone is "taught the holy spirit," however they are most certainly helped by the spirit of Christ, and we can learn what it brings to the table.

I Dont think you master it like its some type of warlock spell.

Sometimes people just use God as an abusive tool dont you think?

I had the misfortune of running into Oneness Pentecostals who make people feel unsaved for not embracing a particular gift. It is like saying you are not saved if you cannot play a piano camp meeting style when in reality only a few can play the piano that well.

You said +++ If the Lord has given you a gift focus on that gift..........
After completed Scripture many claim to have Apostolic 'gifts' eg tongues, healing and more but as yet I unaware of any who claim to be able to and have survived a lethal snake bite or drink a lethal drink, resurrect the dead as the NT apostles were able to, are there any independently verifiable cases that you are aware of and can link to ?

I think Smith is oversimplifying a few things. Was Jesus full of joy and gladness when the Spirit was leading Him to Calvary? Or did He cry out to the Father for another way if possible? By the measuring stick Smith is using Jesus would not have been led by the Spirit.

I only see two types of tongues in the scriptures. Known and Unknown. It's fine to speak an unknown tongue in private prayerbut if you do it publicly then you need someone to interpret.

Also, how does he measure growth in the kingdom? Where is the scriptural mandate for :
1. Go two days without growing… You have lost your vision!
2. Go a week without growing… You are a backslider!

How would he deal with this passage?

Mk 4:26-27 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.

I used to listen to a man named Lester Sumrall back in the 80s. He knew Smith very well and had a good report concerning him. However, I think he was fallible as all men are. We shouldn't take everything men say as "ex cathedra"
All due respect to Smith, but that's my take on it.

The Apostle John says... "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day." - Revelation 1:10 as if to say that was not a blessing that occurred every day in his life. It is my opinion people need to be honest of their relationship with God. For people to say they are of God when they are actually in the flesh is simply put being a hypocrite. When we are not in the Spirit we need to be honest and admit the need of a little prayer and time with God.

Sometimes our zeal gets the better of us (or does me) and we come off harsher than we need to be. Especially when dealing with those who have an obvious agenda to tear down the faith of others. However, this is the mandate we need to obey. A high standard I sometimes fail to reach:

Col 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

"Every man" even those who are enemies to the truth
(what I hear when I click "edit"...lol)

People keep sharing things about the Spirit.

What does the Spirit do?
What does the Spirit of Christ do for believers today?
I rarely ever see people show the scripture...

People just speak about it like its a mystical force they can control or something its not true.

I remember that Jesus talks about abiding in him for without him you can do nothing right?

The Apostle John says... "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day." - Revelation 1:10

Does that mean he spent time not abiding in the things of God... Maybe? I know of myself I have been guilty, especially with all the electrical distractions these days.

I guess all people should take their own time to reflect on their relationship with God.

That is important.

I mean you didnt really answer my question either, how is that fair?

I guess it doesnt matter. All we are about is what we do in the end isnt it?

Well I aint did nothing worth while and im still content about it.

Peace with God comes from faith in JEsus.

Not anything else.

There were many in the Roman times who were unheard of. Get saved and off to the lions den. That seemly was all God had for them. Very little recordings of any kind of spiritual gifts. I would be content on the things God gives us. And always be ready if he desires a little more!

I don't know what God has for you. You don't know what God has form me. Peter didn't know what God had for John. John did not know what God had for Peter...

21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? - John 21

It may be God's will for me to die tomorrow. But what is that in any others business?
