Today, many christians teach that God does not want us to suffer. Yet in the days of Acts, suffering is seem as a tool that God uses to purge us of our sins and self-reliance.

In countries like China, the house church Christians see suffering as something honorable, something they desire which will strengthen the church.

But why are we so afraid to suffer for the Lord today?

Loving people is suffering. Suppose to love your enemies too,

If Christians were tortured and murdered I guess an eye for an eye would mean that someone needs to kill the perpetrator.....
strange, wasn't it because they weren't violent because they saw Jesus, that they were murdered?

This (and @Matthias's historical contributions to the Crusades thread, Reason for The Crusades explained) reminds me of a Steve Brown quote:

"I don't know about Christians being willing to die for Jesus, but we certainly seem ready to kill for Him."

There is a difference between personal eye for eye and law eye for eye. The eye for eye principle is only for law. Personally, we are called to turn the other cheek when strike.

Any justification for violence while taking the name of Jesus as our Saviour is nothing short of hypocrisy.

When the Israelites ask Jesus, shall we turn the woman who commits adultery.
Jesus does not challenge the death penalty for adultery. He does not say, "No. Because it is wrong to stone people for adultery."
Jesus supports the death penalty for adultery.
Are you saying Jesus is a hypocrite for supporting the law stoning of woman silently by not saying anything against the law?
Jesus distinguishes between the personal and the law.
He supports the law to stone adultery, he does not challenge the law.
What He challenges is a religious leader's personal life.

Of courses he challenges the stoning (death penalty). "neither do I condemn you" is a diplomatic rebuttal of that law.

Anyway, this is not about whether death penalty is right or wrong.
It is about, why are we so afraid to suffer for Jesus today?
