Ten, maybe twenty feet. Any closer and I'm his lunch. You can't see them under the water. People from up north or out west visit Florida and they make the mistake of standing too close to a lake. It can be fatal. They’re fast over a short distance. How much of a head start do you require?

Years ago I knew a senior citizen lady who was retiring to Florida. She had bought a mobile home and there was a lake...and a little stream from the lake was only a few feet from her mobile home. Also she didn't drive but said there was a nearby bus stop. I know she could have never outrun an alligator...They’re fast over a short distance. How much of a head start do you require?

Sure glad he wasn't aiming towards you!!!I was from time to time required at work to wade in swamps in south Georgia (and in ponds in central and north Georgia). I remember being thigh deep in swamp water one time and thinking to myself, “God created alligators and he provides them with food to eat. I‘m not alligator food today.” (Not that it helped steady my nerves all that much.) I only saw one gator in 27 years, and I was looking at the south end of a north going one when I did.
