2 Corinthians 5:10, Paul says in his letter to the Romans, that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and that we are made right with God, freely by his grace, that is verdict language, that is foundation language, it does not rise and fall with your mood. But scripture also uses wage language, reward language, receiving language, labor noticed, faithfulness repaid, crowns, inheritance, treasure, commendation, those words do not describe how you enter the family, they describe how a father honors faithful service inside the family. Consider a child and a father, a child does not earn adoption by cleaning his room, he is already a son, but a wise father still notices, he still thanks, he still entrust more to the one who proved faithful with little.

Status is gift, stewardship is evaluated, that distinction changes everything, grace removes condemnation, accountability reveals faithfulness, one secures you, the other shapes you. If you have ever worried that trying hard means you do not trust grace, hear Paul, he trusted grace more deeply than almost anyone and he still lived like his work would be weighed. Now you need to see the place Paul pictured, because the image itself carries comfort. When Paul said judgment seat, the Corinthians did not picture a dark cell with bars, they pictured a raised platform, the term meant a raised place or platform reached by steps, it was used of the official seat of a judge, a place where matters were heard and decisions were rendered, and in Corinth there was a large decorated platform in the center of the marketplace where such hearings happened in the open.

The Corinthians knew what it looked like, stone steps, a seat lifted up so justice could be seen. Paul knew that stone, too, the book of Acts described Paul being brought before Gallo at the tribunal in Corinth, the same kind of seat during his time in that city, which many place around those years. Whether every listener had stood there or only walked past it on market day, they could picture it the moment Paul said it, a man brought forward, a crowd behind, a magistrate above to hear and decide. Consider what that tells you, this is public, not secret, it is orderly, not chaotic, it is a seed of discernment, not a cage. The judge is lifted up to see clearly, not to crush blindly and here is the detail that keeps this from becoming trivia, the believer is not dragged away from Christ to another throne, the believer is brought before Christ himself, the same Lord who forgave is the Lord who evaluates.

A good read for me this morning, @newnature

These 12 verses came to mind:
2Pe 1:1-12 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: (2) Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, (3) seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue; (4) by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust. (5) Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; (6) and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control perseverance; and in perseverance godliness; (7) and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love. (8) For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. (10) Therefore, brothers, be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble. (11) For thus you will be richly supplied with the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (12) Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth.

Romans 8:9, is already possible for those who have the Holy Spirit of God dwelling in them, not as a future achievement, but as a present reality that needs to be lived. Paul was not doing abstract philosophy, when he described the carnal mind and the spiritual mind, he was mapping two concrete ways of inhabiting the world. Two ways of processing the human experience that produce radically different results.
