2 Corinthians 5:10, the issue is not only what was done, but what sword it was, not only activity, but quality, not only visible results, but hidden motives, a gift given for applause and a gift given in love may look the same in a photograph, they are not the same before God. Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter 4 that the Lord will bring to light what is hidden and make known the councils of the hearts and then each one will receive praise from God. Notice that phrase, praise from God, the evaluation ends not only in loss for some, but in honor from the judge himself for faithful hearts. Consider the quiet life for a moment, a person with no platform, no followers, forgave someone who never apologized, prayed for a child who walked away, gave in secret, told the truth when a lie would have been easier. On earth, none of it trended, before Christ, none of it was missed.

Consider a impressive builder for a moment, but with honesty, what if much of that person’s work was driven by rivalry or what if generosity was mixed with control or what if truth was used to win arguments rather than heal people, the results might still impress a crowd, the motives would not survive the light, this is why judgment can be both comforting and searching. Comforting, because God sees what men overlooked. Searching, because God sees why you did what men applauded. You may wonder, will this be shameful, scripture does not give you a detailed picture of emotions in that moment and you should not invent one. What scripture emphasizes is truthfulness and justice from a Lord who is not cruel, he does not expose to destroy, he reveals to honor what is real.

Considering all will be revealed, that gift and reward are different categories, the platform where decisions are rendered in the open, running in the stadium where discipline matters, what bad can mean when condemnation is gone, but you have not yet seen the fire, what survives, what burns and what it means to suffer loss while still being saved. The foundation must be clear before the fire can be understood, 1 Corinthians 3:11, no other foundation, not your sincerity, not your attendance, not your generosity, not your suffering, Jesus Christ himself, that is what you stand on if you are in him, that stone does not crack in heat, what is built on it is the question.
