Hi!I'm new to the forum and I noticed there are many who even seem misunderstand how gravity works and that's easy to understand as many atheists tend to use technobabble and methematical terms when trying to describe it.I will try to describe it as simple as possible and then let you form your own opinion.Visualize space as a mattress and the earth as a bowling ball lying on the mattress. The bowling balls weight creates an indentation in the mattress which is proportial to the weight of the bowling ball. The heavier the bowling ball is the deeper the indentation would be.This is where it gets a bit more advanced. Now imagine the moon as a tennis ball next to the bowling ball. The indentation causes the tennis ball to roll towards the bowling ball. If we now were to set the tennis ball in motion with such a momentum that it were to move away from the bowling ball but without clearing the indentation completely it will start orbiting the bowling ball. The energy of it's movement to high to be drawn towards the bowling ball bit still not enough to let it continue out into space.I apoligize for any grammatical errors as english isn't my first language.

Have you been reading Einstein ?? Me too !! Been reading it for years. I Understand about 97% of his works and thinking.I see you are posting from Sweden , welcome to the forum. I live in Canada , and my parents were from Denmark.Your English and grammar are excellent , I look forward to hearing more from you.Keep in mind centrifugal force plays an important part when it comes to gravity and the planets remaining in place.Centrifugal force is so far an "unknown" force which I find very interesting. Many thanksArnie M.Canada

Gravity is a theory, like evolution. Therefore we must discard it and come up with a Biblical explanation.

Does that mean that the earth is still flat and is the center of the universe? Also does heaven still exist just above the clouds?

That is getting pretty old.Creation is a theory, like gravity.Evolution is a theory, like Santa Clause.

Hehe, that's funny. Everyone knows the bible says the earth is round (spherical) (Isaiah 40:22)By the way, welcome to the forums. I see you're from Sweden. Say hello to Agnetha Fältskog for me. If I had one, just one weakness, that's her. I guess we all have a right to at least one vice. Maybe one day I'll make it over there.

Oh, my mistake, the only reference I have is a picture in a latin bible from the early 1800. Might just be artistic license from the artist.I actually live a few miles from Fältskogs house, might just give her a visit and say hi from you.

You mean her horse farm? I think she built that for her daughter in Ekerö? I already "flew" over that whole area using Google Earth. I must say, your country is beautiful. I have a desktop picture of Jönköping on my other computer.

Seriously,Here is a clip from the History channel about this subject:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAqSCuHA0j8BTW, why are we discussing gravity? I'm curious.

Didn't know she had a horsefarm, only that she lived in Ekerö.(RaddSpencer;50318)

I read through mony posts on the forum where people misunderstood or didn't believe in gravity.I'm not forcing the gravity theory upon you but I think one should have knowledge of a subject before dissmissing it.

Strangely enough, this model of gravity may, indeed, be obsolete. Things change frequently in the realms of science.String Theory (in 2 minutes)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B0Kaf7xYMk&feature=relatedIt has not been validated yet (in other words, no one has experimental proof). Here is some more information:http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/program.html

I don't think that anyone here actually doesn't believe in gravity; most mentions of it have been anecdotal (namely, as a reductio ad absurdum argument in discussions about evolution - "If you don't believe in macroevolution because it can't be directly observed, then you must not believe in gravity either" - the point being that gravity is something everyone accepts, so clearly the logic that is being used to denounce macroevolution is faulty).

Can't say that I understand you there.Gravity is observable and repeatable, and it has had many different theories as to how it really works.1. Newton's2. Einstein's3. String TheoryHowever, if you don't believe that gravity exists, you can always drop a ball and observe its behavior( today, tomorrow the next day etc...). Its obvious that some force causes the ball to travel from your hand to the ground with a constant acceleration (being 9.81 m/s^2 or course).

Okay then what is gravity you can not ignore it is here does the bible say the earth is round ??? I guess if we went with this thinking you would have to say it is still flat. It is science, science is not all bad.We don't see your common advil in the bible, does this mean discard it and come up with a biblical explantation

mmhmm. Whens the last time you attended a class on biology or astrophysics or read a book on either?Or are you just regurgitating what someone at your church told you?

gravity is not observable. The effects of what we "think" are gravity are observable. Same with evolution. Same with cell theory or plate tectonic theory.

If you're so knowledgeable on the subject, mind explaining how a complex organ such as an eye could evolve? That's right, take any part of the eye, and on its own it does nothing. Nothing! Only fully-formed does it function as the visual aid which lets us see god's work as only we can.Go on, try and find a creature with only a "partially" formed (vestigial) eye, which was an "evilutionary" stepping stone. You won't succeed. Even the lowliest insects have been gifted with sight. Trust the words of god, the guidance of Genesis: we were made in his image.:angel9:And as for the theory of Gravity, after so many years science still doesn't know the true way it works. Honestly, it works because God wants humans to walk upon the earth. It's that simple, He is all-powerful, and thus all objects fall to the earth as per his demand.

Ah, the irreducible complexity argument. The reason why irreducible complexity is wrong is because the statement that each part of the eye does nothing on its own is false. Each of the pieces of the eye conferred a small evolutionary advantage on its own, even before it functioned as a whole. Even Michael Behe, the loudest proponent of irreducible complexity, admits to the possibility of this. Eyes originated as simple photoreceptor cells that could detect the presence or absence of light. In the next step of evolution, by developing a small depression for the cells, the direction of the light could be detected. As the depressions continued to deepen via the evolutionary process, increased precision of light detection became available. Eventually, the aperture of the eye shrunk in order to focus the light and allowed the organism to make out shapes and objects. Lastly, the lens evolved, which assisted in the focusing of this light. So, evolutionary theory is perfectly compatible with the development of the eye. Each of its constituent parts offers an evolutionary advantage, even before the final eye had taken form. Also, please don't use phrases like "evilution;" it's awfully childish and generally not conducive to intelligent discussion.(ForYou;50427)

adren@aline was being sarcastic. The point was that the "just a theory" criticism is so frequently levied at evolution, but if we were to adopt that logic then we'd have to toss out gravity as well. He obviously believes in gravity.

We get the point (and have heard it as often as you've heard "it's just a theory"), but disagree with the application. Gravity is Evolution are totally different theories.I can test gravity, right now, at my desk, and I can see it proved over and over again. In fact, doing so makes me think of God. Any idea why gravity keeps working? Who made the laws that govern our universe? Perhaps that goes beyond the simple Theory of Evolution, but it should be asked at some point.Biblical creation is also a theory. Do you mind if i compare it to gravity in efforts to prove to you that it is true? Or would you find the comparison nonsensical like we find the comparison of the Theory of Evolution to gravity nonsensical?I suspect you would find it nonsensical. Evolution is just a theory, and nothing like gravity at all.
