What about those who come to the faith during that time... would it not be a tribulation for those?

Sure it would Andy, however, God has never exempted his people from the firey trials that have come upon the earth in the past but kept them safe through it. He had also called unbelievers to repentance during those times. Some examples: Noah and the flood - 1 Peter 3:20 Moses and the plagues - Exodus 9:6-7, Exodus 9:25-26, Exodus 10:23, Exodus 11:6-7.

Intense persecution came upon the early Christains after the stoning of Stephen Acts 8:1 believers endured 10 years of Tribulation during that dark period in history.

The great Tribulation is the last firey trial which has been foretold to come upon the earth before the second coming of Christ. Opportunity for salvation is always available during this period Revelation 9:20, Revelation 16:9, 11, 21....but many will not turn from their wickedness...

Matthew 24:13 says that those who endure to the end will be saved. If Christians were not present during this period of time, the writer would not have spoken of "the elect" Matthew 24:22, 24-25.
