Don't know what you mean exactly, but what I can tell you about the "Christian" audience in general is that there is a dearth of knowledge and understanding on this topic as well as many others.

If he was baptized it would have been unto John's baptism. He couldn't have been baptized into Christ because Christ was still alive.

Very simple answer: our sins. Upon being baptized into Christ, your sins are remitted according to Acts 2:38. While you're in sin, you're separated from God. By being saved, your sins are forgiven and you are no longer separated from God.
