Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

No. I think they truly believed it. Such that they were willing to die for it. It still doesn't mean what they believed was the truth. Should we ignore the Muslims that routinely kill themselves in order to be martyrs? Or Christian snake handlers that get bitten, refuse treatment, and die? Many...

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

I'll take a look. No, not entirely. How do you know? Furthermore, how do we know it isn't a fictitious story written after Jesus died on the cross? Agreed.

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

I see plenty of evidence. The universe itself is evidence of something. However, I don't see any evidence that it was the Christian God that created everything. It could just as well have been Thor or Zeus. Christians say they know it was God. But they really don't. None of us do because we...

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

Well, I guess I don't know for certain. But there's a very noticeable lack of evidence. That's good. I think people are afraid to say they don't know for fear of being seen as ignorant. Everyone has an opinion on everything nowadays.

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

I agree, in part. There is certainly an amount of peer pressure in any group setting. Atheists are not above attacking people for questioning science. This was put on full display for the world to see during Covid. "The Science" was not to be questioned. I say in part, because Christians also...

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

No. Because Bigfoot doesn't exist. Even if he did exist, he can't simultaneously exist outside of the universe and within it. See, I find it more comforting to say I don't know. Because I truly don't. The atheist who says they know there is no God, is just as religious as the Christian that...

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

Everyone is concerned about God's existence in one way or another. Atheists aren't concerned about proving a negative. It's ultimately up to Christians to provide substantial evidence for the claims made in the bible. I expect the same of Islam. How do you know it was God that did it?

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

We also can't prove that big foot doesn't exist.

Critical thinking and education is linked to loss of faith

Science was born out of asking questions. Any religion that tells one to stop questioning, has something to hide.

    It's a funny thing...

Why not after you die? What's the difference?

    It's a funny thing...

That's what I meant. My apologies. You as well, Matthias. But how is this so? What is the process? Why do we not see the soul leaving the body when people die? I guess it largely depends on how one dies.

    It's a funny thing...

I'm curious. Where were you before you were born? Did you feel horror? Do you have any memories from that time? I've seen people die. There's no magical moment where the soul leaves the body. They just die. They return to the state that they existed in before being born. The state of non-existence.

How a Skeptical Philosopher Becomes a Christian

You claim to be teaching them to read critically. How do they even know what this means if you don't explain it to them? Laws, yes. But not so much in the way of moralistic rules. It's the moralism that I take issue with. Fair enough.

How a Skeptical Philosopher Becomes a Christian

They call themselves Christians, but they don't care what's on the bible beyond what the pastor tells them is in there. Such is not the case with Islam. They read their holy book. Fair enough. Then you can't blame them for walking away after being critical of the material. They're doing...

How a Skeptical Philosopher Becomes a Christian

Not everyone, no. But a great many Christians don't even read the bible. When they finally do, they of course have questions. Based on my own experience, Christian leaders, pastors and such, are just as much in the dark on these questions as any other Christians. When I went to a private...

How a Skeptical Philosopher Becomes a Christian

It's really not so complicated. I read Genesis and decided it couldn't possibly be true. In fact, many ex-Christians often say that reading the bible was a revelation for them and a contributing factor, if not the main factor, in why they abandoned the religion. Many of them have no idea how far...

How a Skeptical Philosopher Becomes a Christian

The same can be said for Christians. It's ultimately about what you can bring yourself to believe. I'm doing better, thanks. How about yourself?

How a Skeptical Philosopher Becomes a Christian

I'm sorry, but if you have to post a 14,000 word essay to get your point across, I'm just really not interested. Besides, anyone can open a bible and read Genesis. It's kind of a litmus test.

    It's a funny thing...

Because I believed there was a chance I was wrong about people. I know now that I wasn't. I don't wish to discuss it further.
