You are still avoiding the question ... the fact is that someone could be physically forced to take a literal mark in a totalitarian regime. And at a personal level, a father could physically coerce his wife and children to comply. In that case, is the marked person lost?

You make a good point about people being physically forced to take the mark whether they want to or not. In a totalitarian regime people are coerced into compliance. In that case, the mark means nothing if the person's faith is in Jesus Christ.

I don't think they use any rules (hermeneutics) to decipher this highly metaphorical text.

I am pretty sure the "adult" doesn't believe it either ... it's just a matter of going along with the madness to keep his job. Maybe gives a bit of insight into how the mark of the beast could be just accepted for the sake of getting along.
