Did you read Genesis 2:6: "A mist was going up from the ground." There was water upon the earth, but sufficient evaporation ("mist") to the sky for rain to fall had not yet occurred.

My impression is that the earth itself was not destroyed, rather it broke up. The disturbance shifted water all over the globe and settled the water back into the low areas, in the process drowning all but eight people. Search the internet "Pangaea" ("all earth").

The water in the sky is water on the earth that has evaporated up into the sky. Great sprinkler system, since the water is reusable. At the very beginning of the creation I presume there would be no rain until sufficient evaporation into the sky had occurred.

We have the same "mist from the ground" (Genesis 2:6) today. Water on the earth evaporates, rises into the sky, condenses, and falls back down. Great sprinkler system.

The springs began "welling" up to the surface of the ground. This allowed the water to evaporate up into the sky, and then sprinkle back down when the amount of water in the sky exceeded the capacity of the sky to absorb it. This cycle is still going on today.

IMO: "God had not yet sent rain" (Genesis 2:5) refers to the hydrodynamic cycle. The water that was created on the surface of the earth required time to evaporate up into the sky, coalesce into clouds, release onto the earth in the form of droplets, and then continue this cycle, as it is still...

These same springs/lakes/oceans are still watering the ground today.

The purpose of the flood was to kill all the people, not to kill all the animals. Some domestic animals were on the ark as part of the provisions. The ark came to rest on Mount Ararat in Turkey.

The Bible says, "All the fountains of the great deep broke forth" (Genesis 7:11). IMO this was caused by a splitting action. The water swept the surface of the surface of the earth, and settled back into the low places.
