I agree that "redefining" words isn't cool. But, there is no redefining of the English word, "hate" in Luke 14:26 . I think misunderstanding the meaning of the passage is simply a matter of not really trying to understand what Jesus was talking about.

I could see that if they misunderstood that the parable was addressed to the privilege of the Jewish Nation (this is what the "Rich Man" represented) and the assumption that they were automatically "saved" because of their heritage..... as opposed to Lazarus (representing the Gentiles).
