    Heaven or Hell?

All this confusion I am seeing is one of the reasons I was so thrilled to find that book, "How to Read The Bible For All Its Worth", years ago... and why I so vehemently recommended it to Sean to read.

Going to take a break from the forums

Yes, it seems like a smart thing to do. I might take a day or two off, myself.

    Poll Bible

Exactly. God is saying that their fast is useless because of their motives for doing it.

Misleading statements made like that one are nowhere near being funny.

    "Another" Helper

Does anyone here know for certain whether or not the word "another" is even expressed in the original text?

Very frankly and honestly, THAT IS A DANGEROUS STATEMENT. There are any number of ailments and/or conditions for which fasting could prove highly detrimental to a person's health

This is just a tiny, tiny bit of what I told you I have on "Fasting." It is sobering to realize that the very first statement Jesus made about fasting dealt with the question of motive (Matt. 6:16–18). To use good things to our own ends is always the sign of false religion. How easy it is to...

Well, I used to also believe (because I was told this) that Revelation was written in AD 94. I have since read enough evidence to believe it was, instead, written about 66 or 67.

It really isn't known as a positive fact, but I think he is thought to have died at Ephesus sometime after AD 98.

I also have a book on that.... :)

You know how I feel about it. Give yourself the time to develop a better idea of HOW to read it first. Considering the things you have already been told to accept, I think it is imperative that you address that propensity for seeing with biased eyes that you may have absorbed first. You...

    The Literary Context

I think you have the right attitude, but I might have expressed it differently. Like: "Everything we think we know might not all be as accurate as we sometimes swear it is."

Sean is a member who is currently learning details and techniques of deeper study of the Bible. The first book he is reading explains various terms such as exegesis and hermeneutics. I was simply asking him to apply the knowledge he is acquiring to the statement made, in order to verify its...

    The Literary Context

I have given the book to several people. And I hope they read — or are reading — it. If so, they will have an advantage over so many of us who decided they simply needed to do no more than just pick up the Bible and begin reading. This book even suggests reading ANOTHER book before reading...

    The Literary Context

I think their reasoning is that when any of us read a commentary, we are getting one man's personal slant on things. And if that commentary is the first thing we consult, there is a strong likelihood that we will quickly become biased in favor of the commentator's POV.

    The Literary Context

The Questions of Content The second major category of questions one asks of any text has to do with the author’s actual content. “Content” has to do with the meanings of words, the grammatical relationships in sentences, and the choice of the original text where the manuscripts have variant...

does the verse proof Christians Should go Knock on Doors and Evenaglize

Since many people like to read into that passage that we are all supposed to be missionaries, going into all the world (which the passage does not say, BTW, since we are told to whom He is talking.), then they have put themselves, and everyone else in disobedience if they are not traveling...

    The Literary Context

I recently made a fairly bold statement that I thought a certain book was so important that I felt people should read that book before they began to seriously (and studiously) read the Bible, itself. We hear a lot about "reading in context", but it occurred to me that some people may not really...

It isn't whose interpretation is better, or "right", but which interpretation best expresses the original intent.
