In the end by Scripture reading and prayer the believer by God's grace can acquire a vertical ('looking unto Jesus' - Hebrews 12.2) rather than horizontal or even inward-looking one.

hi @Amanda F It's really not a question of trying to be "good" enough to make it - 'all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God' (Romans 3.23); but it's a matter of 'being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ' (Romans 5.1). I do love the Gospel...

I don't think that modern versions are more memorable, though; KJV verses seem to stay in the mind almost word perfectly, for some reason.
