My mom used the Sear's catalog too. I guess that's because they were city or town based. In the country the waste in an outhouse just went back to the ground. Not used as much.

I can remember while on vacation in the countryside of Pennsylvania, using an outhouse. It was a deep hole with a wooden seat but not too bad. The slats of wood on the upper wall were spaced to let fresh air in. My mom used an outhouse regularly as a child...one time there was a Black snake...

When I visited Asia, I experienced one of them!
