You don't impute a gift. The righteousness of God is a gift of grace from God. It is HIS righteousness....not ours. If you build a house....it can be attributed (imputed) to you. But if God does something and gives it to you...it is imputed to Him.

It is the resurrection of Jesus that changes everything. He is risen. That means He is available and able to give us His power to do as He did. We are not to try being so good that we can be sinless on our own. We are sinless only by entering into Christ...where there is no sin at all.
