The old Virginian out house (ship house too try to put it nicely). I had to use it growing up. There you are in an old rickety building, naked, in an unbearable stink, and sitting there wondering what varieties of spiders were crawling up your backside. And in it the old nightly rusty pee-pot. I have never imagined a place nastier! My time in that place was very short!

I can remember while on vacation in the countryside of Pennsylvania, using an outhouse. It was a deep hole with a wooden seat but not too bad. The slats of wood on the upper wall were spaced to let fresh air in.

My mom used an outhouse regularly as a child...one time there was a Black snake in there on the shelf. Her dad threw it by the nearby river.

My dad grew up on a farm in western Kansas during the Great Depression. All they had was an outhouse. And for toilet paper, they used the Sears' catalog they'd get in the mail. (It wasn't the glossy pages we get now, and hey, it was free.) They always looked forward to the Christmas edition because it was thicker than usual.

I went to a traditional tea house in Taiwan whose public "toilet" was a modern version of the traditional Chinese slit-trench: A concrete trench that you straddled and squat over. As a concession to hygiene, it had running water.

I think they took tradition too far. I decided to hold it until we got back to Taipei.

Jerry Clower tells of one of his neighbors that had water pipe with a faucet in the ground next to his front porch . The pipe was short and had no water coming to it but the neighbor wanted to impress people that he had running water lfh .

i bet even their eldery do better than ours . IF we had to squat
every time we used the number called two
our legs had remained much stronger . I have noticed the elderly
who kept their legs strong , sure do much better than the lazy . Just a friendly reminder .
Now of course if one has not good balance , due to they american or etc
well probably not an good idea to try and squat , lest one falls into the dung .

When I visited Asia, I experienced one of them!

actually the example given in the bible is the best . notice they went outside the camp
to make doo doo and wee wee . and buried the dung when once they were done .
Leaving an open dung hole is not quite as safe , LEST one has lots of lye and etc .
I bet if we still had to squat to excrete we had been amazed at how our leg strength and balance had remained .
You dont use you lose it .

My uncles and my dad all used outhouses, I did too when I was young. One uncle had a house in a mill town, it was like a subdivision, and each house had an outhouse. Then gradually, each put a bathroom on the back porch, because no one wanted a toilet in the house. They thought toilets were too nasty for inside a house.

notice , however the pattern . First long ago people did not have running water as we do today . SO today its easy to wipe and flush .
BUT EVEN GOD told the jews , GO OUTSIDE the camp . HE dwells amongst them
In the old days it would have been real nasty to have that kind of dump hole in the house . Surely i can understand that .
Today , well its wipe and flush .

My mom used the Sear's catalog too.

In Tudor England we had Gong Farmers... I bet you can guess what they did right?

Well someone had to do it...

I guess that's because they were city or town based.

In the country the waste in an outhouse just went back to the ground. Not used as much.
