Agree. Futurists ignore Revelation 17:8 which says that the beast "was" before John wrote the book of Revelation. The number of its name, 666, doesn't come into existence in the future, it has always been the beast's number. As you indicated, the beast has been around since Cain and it gets its power from the dragon, Satan (Rev 13:4). The beast makes war with the saints (Rev 13:8). It hates God and His people.

I see the beast as generally being the same as "the world" as Jesus described it.

John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

The world (the beast) hates us and makes war with us because it hated Jesus before it hated us. If we worshiped the beast then those who worship the beast would love us as well because "the world would love his own". But, we are not of the world. We do not worship the beast. So, the world hates us and the beast makes war with us. If fits. The beast is this evil world with the dragon, Satan, as its god (2 Cor 4:4) and its heads represent historical world empires. The one that "is" at the time Revelation was written was obviously the Roman empire.
