My grandmother has a high school degree and worked mostly at the post office. However, she kept her home immaculately (still does), cooks wonderfully, can do calligraphy, decorates like a magazine cover, sews, and keeps her mind sharp with crossword puzzles, books, and news.
My mother had a career in education and public relations. She was great and she loved me but many skills were not passed down.
I had an uphill battle in the area of cleaning. I fought to learn how to do it well and it's gotten better over time. I can hand sew a little but my sewing machine collects dust. My handwriting is barely legible. I love cooking but I don't have a fraction of the skills my grandmother has.
Women traded being adept at skills for careerism pushed by feminism. Now there are plenty in my generation who don't know how to do laundry and can't cook anything that isn't microwaved. Home economics classes in public high schools have often been removed.
Since society has largely bought the lie that women are wasted at home, we've lost not only skills but community life as well. Kids used to play with other kids in neighborhoods since Moms were always home. The mother's would also organize community events, barbecues, and activities for the kids.
