Again, it is illogical to base faith upon the private interpretation of a book. For faith consists in submitting; private interpretation consists in judging. In faith by hearing, the last word rests with the teacher; in private judgment it rests with the reader, who submits the dead text of Scripture to a kind of post-mortem examination and delivers a verdict without appeal: he believes in himself rather than in any higher authority.

Why was this term used to describe the scriptures?

Ro 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think [of himself] more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Phl 3:9 . And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

God determines the quality and quantity of the faith each one posseses. It corresponds to the works He has foreordained for each to do in this life to show forth His power and glory. It is not manufactured or increased by an act of the will. It has to come from above, since that is the only Source of faith. How we respond to that impartation is what determines our actions. It is a mistake to consider the faith we have to be somehow inherent to ourselves. It is not. It is Christ's faith, the Word, Who imparted that to us by His mercy to bestow unmerited gratuity to whomever He has chosen.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen KJV
Faith is an assumption of what is being expected, a conviction concerning matters which are not being observed CLV
And faith is of things hoped for a confidence, of matters not seen a conviction,YLT

Faith is the power of God manifested in mortal bodies. It animated the Christ on earth, and propels us forward to the end of all things. Without Him distributing such power, we would be helpless and without God in this world.

Faith is outside the scope of observation. It has nothing whatsoever to do with logic or reasoning. It cannot be measured by us, or compared, or quantified. It is the conduit between the human being and its' Creator. No man can judge another as to whether it exists or not in that person. Only the Father of spirits can know, and this is for His purposes, not ours.
