A VISIT TO FISHER'S HOUSE.

Fisher's House, as some called it, was an old yellow Stucco house located near one of the main streets of Yorktown Heights, N.Y. It had been abandoned since, probably, the middle 1930s.

My friend Michael and I visited Fisher's house way back in 1967. At that time, it was overgrown with weeds and trees, and it was well hidden from view from the main street, yet there was a path to the house from the forest. The reason I say that it was abandoned since the 1930s is that all over the floors were pages of the "Saturday Evening Post" from 1932-1934.

There was a ground floor and a stairway that led to the second floor. There were a few bedrooms on the second floor, and in one bedroom, a bed and mattress were still there, with broken glass on the mattress.

Little is known about Mr. Fisher, only that a small lake was near the house, which everyone called "Fisher's Lake." All in all, it was a house that I imagine had a lot of memories. Oh, if the walls could only talk. How many adventures did they witness?

I had another friend at Yorktown High School. His name was Burt. Well, we heard some kids saying that "Fisher's House" was haunted, that "Old Man Fisher" was still there, somewhere. You know how some kids talk. Well, Burt and I decided to find out. We would "camp out" on the second floor of "Fisher's House." Spend the night there and see what would happen.

We took our sleeping bags, and Burt took his portable transistor radio, and we settled down for the night. So, there we were at "Fisher's House," awaiting "Mr. Fisher". Well, Burt turned on his radio, and we listened to the song, "Chica-Boom, Chica-boom. Did we sleep? Can't say that we did. The night passed slowly, yet we did hear scurrying sounds downstairs of rats and mice, but Mr. Fisher never showed up.

The next morning, we came downstairs, and we took out our magic markers and started writing our initials on the walls. Yes, we were there and stayed all night. We even wrote some "dirty words" in Spanish on the walls (since Burt sat behind me in Mrs. Tuckerman's Spanish class). You know how teens are, young and "smart Alleks." Yet we did hear a voice from the house next door: "Boys, you need to leave NOW." (Guess someone still owned Fisher's House) Maybe a relative.

We had to leave our "marks behind." Let the world know that "Jimmy, Burt, and Michael" were there.

Michael passed away a year ago. His mom called me to tell me. I don't know if Burt is still alive. Who knows if "Fisher's House" is still standing, or if it was renovated, or torn down? We kept some of the "Saturday Evening Post" pages for souvenirs. So where am I going with all this? It reminds me of another house, and a visitor to that "other house."

2000 years ago, God came to visit his house, the house he created so long ago. The house he called "Earth." It was once a beautiful place with plants, trees, oceans, docile animals, and his special creation called "Mankind." Yet mankind corrupted himself with the plague of sin, turning the once "beautiful paradise" into a violent and corrupted house. It was never abandoned like Fisher's house, but sin took toll, and we see a sin-ravaged Earth with pollution, hate, and war.

Jesus came to visit his Earth and "left his mark." The "ink" he wrote with was not from magic markers but from blood from his own veins. He left his mark on the cross of Calvary and on the hearts of all mankind. He spoke from Heaven and told men what to write in his book. He left his mark on the bodies of men and women, the marks of healings, of saved souls, of teaching and learning. He left his house after 30-some years.

No, his house will never be abandoned, unlike Fisher's House. He has plans for his house. It will be made anew. New Heavens and a new Earth. Someday, someday soon, we will be living on this "New Earth," his house "made anew." A house that will last....FOREVER.
