(Personal actions of the Holy Spirit,) at this point, scripture takes you beyond personhood, the Spirit is not merely a created personal messenger standing near God. In Acts chapter 5, Ananias lies about money he has kept back. Peter says he has lied to the Holy Spirit, then says he has not lied to men, but to God, the narrative closely identifies lying to the Spirit with lying to God. In Matthew 28:19 and in John chapters 14 through 16, relationships remain distinct, the Father sends the Spirit in Jesus’ name. Jesus sends the Spirit from the Father, the Spirit glorifies the Son and communicates what belongs to him.
The Spirit is not the Father, the Spirit is not the Son, yet he acts in the identity and work of the one God, that is why Paul can write in 2 Corinthians 13:14, fellowship. That word fellowship belongs to relationship, not machinery. Historic Christianity has confessed the Spirit as personal and divine across centuries. Pentecostal Christians bring a particular expectation that he still gives gifts, empowers witness, guides mission and works among believers. But the stronger that expectation becomes, the more closely it must retain the shape scripture gives it. The Spirit’s guidance remains accountable to truth, his gifts serve the common good, his teaching keeps Jesus central, his presence cannot be reduced to intensity.
The Spirit speaks, he teaches, he guides, he testifies, he knows, he chooses, these personal actions have shown communication, intelligence, purpose and will, but another personal action does not happen on a mission field or in a gifted congregation, it happens where the believer has nothing left to contribute, no clear decision, no visible gifts, no confident prayer. Consider a person awake at 2:00 in the morning, maybe sleep will not come, because the future changed that afternoon. Maybe the room outside a hospital has reduced every confident sentence to a few broken words. Maybe grief has been carried so long that every prayer now feels either too small or too angry. Romans chapter 8 enters that room, the chapter has already spoken of adoption, suffering, hope and the groaning of creation.
