That switch is designed so as to not be casually turned off or on.
Even if pilot's mind is elsewhere, why did he do it?

I believe yes. Schizophrenics hear destructive voices telling them to do horrible acts, drives them crazy.
Not saying he was schizoid, but he could have been under demonic oppression and swayed to do a horrible act.

I know what you're saying, but AI and robotics is where all things are heading. My grandkids are going to live in that world of the 'Jetsons'.
And AI will link with AI, they will interconnect and communicate, a rogue AI won't get too far before being discovered and shut down, unless the whole system is corrupted somehow. I figure there will be lots of growing pains while things progress.

AI will have it's part to play in the last days. That is certain, but when is an open question.
