Years ago I was in the Gideons and loved to give away bibles. I read of many miraculous things that happened through the bible give aways. This one I got to see myself.
I was working at Alcoa at Bauxite, Arkansas and as I came out from work one afternoon a politician running for local office was handing out matchbooks with his ad on them. I was not a smoker but took one anyway. I remembered thinking "what do I need this for"? as I put it into the glove compartment.
We went to church that night and afterwards to the market where my wife went in. I sat there and as I did I saw a young man coming down the walk. He had a pack on his back and was obviously a traveler. I met his eyes as he approached and as he came to my car window he asked "do you have any matches"? With no hesitation I answered yes I do. I knew everything had happened for this.
I leaned over and retrieved the matchbook I'd been given that very day. I also got a small Gideon printed new testament.
I told the young man as I handled him the matches "here's something else for you too".
He looked at the new testament for a few moments then said "yeah, that's what I need". He walked away and I never saw him again. Interruptions are divine instructions. I had felt something special when the man gave me the matches. God can work through the smallest things.
Eternity and a piece of candy
When I was a member of the Gideons many years ago I'd get these testimony books that contained nothing but testimonys of people that had gotten saved by reading the Bible. No denominations, no outside influences, the undiluted word of God and lives changed through it's eternal power .
A Bible distribution was being made in a city of Egypt many years ago at a time when Christians could do such a thing. This Bible distribution was in what we would call an elementary school for young children who were for the majority, Muslim.
The bibles were given out and after recess the exuberant kids rushed outside to play. It happened to be a very windy day and one of the young children began to just tear pages from the small new testament and release them into the wind that carried them over the wall surrounding the school yard. I'm certain the child had been warned against the Christians.
Out on the street a candy vendor pushed his cart beside that same wall hawking his home made candies. The gusting wind began to blow small pieces of paper past him. Always needing paper with which to wrap the candy he began to hastily snatch this bounty brought by the wind. With a handful of the small sheets he began to wrap more of his sugary wares.
On down the street a passerby stopped and bought a piece or two of candy and began to hastily tear off the wrapper and throw it away. A shred of one of the very sticky pieces of paper clung to his finger and he was trying to scrape it off. It clung on stubbornly and looking at it closer he saw that there was text on it.
It was very small but seemed to stand out as he attempted to read it. There was a single word. ETERNITY.
Gripped at the gravity of that solitary printed word he looked back toward where the candy vendor had been. Practically running back in the direction he'd come from he soon found the man and demanded to know where the mysterious paper had come from. After finding it had came over that wall he went inside the school and discovered the story of the Bible distribution. Now he learned that the Bible distribution had originated at a Christian church in the city. Going there he discussed this gripping word eternity with the pastor. He was instructed in the gospel and the way of salvation in Jesus Christ the savior and there made his commitment to God.
The power and anointing of God contained in a single heart gripping word. Eternity. It doesn't take chapters of Bible text to move a heart. Only one of the all powerful words of God is required to move a heart to Him. If there were but a single letter and the Lord chose to save through if He could.
Many such testimonies I read and a Beatles song even helped one man find his way to God. A man in despair over his life situation was outside the hotel he was staying in when the Beatles song "Rocky Raccoon" began to play on the speakers at the pool. At the part where "Gideons Bible" is mentioned he got up and went to his room and found the bible in one of the drawers. He began to read and so was saved by giving heed to the words written there. Even a heathen band is utilized by the Lord to lead hungry souls to Him.
