There is no doubt that physical man had to be created first, before Spiritual man could be. Adam came first, Jesus came second; Does that mean Jesus is in second place? May it never be. Water baptism came first, Spiritual baptism came second, does that mean Spiritual baptism is inferior. MAY IT NEVER BE!
Above all, God is first and He is spirit, then came the material creation and man was created "BELOW" that. "...and the spirit of God moved upon the waters of the deep", before the creation of man. It was the Holy Spirit "ABOVE" the physical waters below, that hovered and sanctified (baptized) the earth (Land) below it in order to separate the waters from the waters, and by the Power of the Holy Spirit, new life could be created both on the earth and in the waters; and we, by the Power of the Holy Spirit are a NEW Creation on the earth. Jesus says "go to the upper room where you will recieve POWER". Jesus reserects the dead by the POWER of the Holy Spirit.
John the Baptist asked Jesus to baptized him, and many people believe he was asking Jesus to baptize him with water. This is completely false. John spoke these words before meeting Jesus at the river Jordan. "I baptize you with water for repentance...", but HE who comes AFTER me, baptizes you WITH the Holy Spirit and Fire. In other words Jesus will baptize you with a GREATER, more POWERFUL baptism. When John recognized Jesus and the Power HE holds, so John asked Jesus for HIS baptism, because Jesus baptism was from above, but John was below that, and so was his baptism and water.
But having said that, repentance must come before Jesus baptism, not because water is first but because man sinned against God and against himself and lost his vision of who he was in Christ and lost his purpose (way) as a result of losing his dominian. Once one comes to his/her senses (Nebuchadnezzar) and realizes the Greatness and mercies of God, and repents before God for having lived in offense to Him, and askes forgiveness, then God will pour out His spirit on whosoever believeth, that he should not perish but have everlasting life, because the Spirit of God is above all. The spirit is the first and the last, the beginning and the end and from everlasting to everlasting. The material existence is not, in fact it is perishing.
