I believe the rich man's wealth was an idol to him. His possessions were more important to him than God.

But also notice the wealthy man was a ruler, and to follow Jesus he would likely be forced to forfit his position. So his reluctance was two fold; fear of losing wealth and power.

This verse seems more to the point IMO.
Romans 10:9

If someone believes Jesus is Lord, how deep is that belief? Will their life reflect that knowledge? I believe it should and it is part of sanctification when the ties to the world are broken, and replaced with increasing faith in the Lord.
