Ezekiel 37 thru 39, Chapter by chapter, line upon line...
First, Important To Know:
Back in the Ezekiel 3 Chapter, God tells Ezekiel to go to the "house of Israel" and speak His warning to them. God tells Ezekiel that He made Ezekiel a "watchman" to the "house of Israel." (Ezek.3:17). Ezekiel was in the Babylon captivity of the "house of Judah", the Jews of the southern "kingdom of Judah" which Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had taken captive to Babylon. But just north of where Ezekiel was were the ten tribes of the "house of Israel" that had been taken captive about 200 years earlier, by the kings of Assyria. God sends Ezekiel to them, to those ten tribes of the "house of Israel" that were captive just to the north.
Many brethren are ignorant about God having split old Israel in Solomon's days into two separate kingdoms and regions. That event is written starting in 1 Kings 11 and the two kingdoms exist against each other until 2 Kings 17 when God removes the northern ten tribe "kingdom of Israel" by the kings of Assyria to the lands of Assyria and the Medes. Only the "kingdom of Judah" at the southern holy land was left, and about 200 years later they also would go into captivity to Babylon but by the king of Babylon. Thus it's important to understand that after that split of 1 Kings 11-12, the name Israel is applied only to the northern ten tribe "kingdom of Israel" with its capital city at Samaria. And the title of Jew is applies only to the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi that made up the southern "kingdom of Judah" at Jerusalem. Many make the mistake of calling all Israelites by the title of Jews, when that is not so per God's written Word, nor history (the Jewish historian Josephus said the title of Jew comes from the tribe of Judah, and that's what those of the Babylon captivity that returned to Jerusalem called themselves, and all those who dwelt in the southern holy land of Judea.)
Why is this important to understand? It's because after God split old Israel into two separate kingdoms and nations, He has given specific Bible prophecies to each house. If you don't know about the two separate 'houses' then you won't rightly understand which prophecy is to which 'house'. In these Ezekiel 37 through 39 Chapters, God is speaking through His "watchman" Ezekiel that He sent to the ten tribe "house of Israel" .
Ezek 37
1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
3 And he said unto me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" And I answered, "O Lord GOD, thou knowest."
4 Again He said unto me, "Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, 'O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.'
5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; 'Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.'"
Firstly, this is not... about a rapture nor the future resurrection. This is about God having sent Ezekiel to the scattered ten tribes captive to the north of Babylon, and prophesying The Word of God to them. This prophesying means to teach. It is about The Holy Spirit entering into them with God's Truth, so that their spirit might LIVE.
That idea of their being like dead bones is a metaphor for their being like 'walking dead' inside without God's Spirit in them. Lord Jesus showed this state with the blind Pharisees whom He said were like whited tombs on the outside that appeared beautiful, but inside were full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness (Matthew 23:27).
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.
Thus Ezekiel obeys what God told him to do, and prophesied to the ten tribes while in their captivity north of Babylon.
9 Then said He unto me, "Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, 'Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.'
10 So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
11 Then He said unto me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, 'Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.'
12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, 'Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O My people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13 And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14 And shall put My spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.'"
The "four winds" have to do with the end of this present world. Per Revelation 7, the four winds are held back and not to hurt anything on earth until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads with God's seal. When those "four winds" blow at the end, then will come the "caught up" and resurrection event of 1 Thessalonians 4, with the ten tribe "house of Israel" being gathered back to the lands which God promised their fathers.
15 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
16 "Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, 'For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions:' then take another stick, and write upon it, 'For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:'
This is showing us how God had separated old Israel in Solomon's day into two separate kingdoms and peoples. God tells Ezekiel to write upon one stick, "For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions". That is about the southern "kingdom of Judah" that after the split was made up of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi, and a small remnant out of the northern ten tribes that rejected the calf idol worship which king Jeroboam setup. After the split, these were also known as the "house of Judah", or "Judah", or "Jerusalem", and even the metaphorical name "Aholibah" of Ezekiel 23.
Then God tells Ezekiel to write upon another stick, "For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions." When God split old Israel into two separate kingdoms, He gave Jeroboam of the tribe of Ephraim to reign as king over the northern ten tribes (See 1 Kings 11). The tribe of Ephraim was the largest tribe among the ten northern tribes, and Solomon had setup Jeroboam earlier as governor over the northern ten tribes. Ephraim was the younger son of Joseph and is who would receive the transfer of God's Birthright Blessings from Jacob. Ephraim's seed was prophesied to become "a multitude of nations". Ephraim's elder brother, Manasseh would also become "great" (See Genesis 48). These are the "house of Israel", and the main ones Ezekiel was sent to prophesy to here. The "house of Israel" after the split represents only... the ten tribes that dwelt in the northern holy land. When Jeroboam of Ephraim was made "king of Israel" by God, their capital city was in the north at Samaria. Thus other names in Bible prophecy for these northern ten tribes are just the name "Israel", for they became known as the Israel after the split. And also they were known as the "kingdom of Israel", or just "Samaria", or just by the name "Ephraim", and even by the metaphorical harlot name "Aholah", etc. Those names apply only... to these of the ten northern tribes that were scattered first out of the holy land, which Ezekiel is prophesying to here.
