You do not have to go to college to have an adequate understanding of the scriptures. Keep in mind for the first 1500 years Christians did not have Bibles in their hands.....atleast not the New Testament. And for the first part of Christianity they did not have the writings of the Apostle Paul .....Yet tens of thousands were saved.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

Salvation is simple....Act 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

And participate in Bread and Wine Ritual.... I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6:51 And....Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. John 6:53 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them John 6:55

Love God and each other and help those that you can.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
1st Corinthians 6:9-10

Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19-21

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Romans 6:1-2

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 1st Corinthians 5:10

We all sin but Yeshua expects us to do our best to keep it to a minimum. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1st John 1:7-9

Be good and do good the best you can.

Now if we wrote this down and dropped it on an island, that would be all they need to be saved.

Now for a more detailed understanding of the Bible.
What not to do.....Do not go to the Bible looking for what you want to believe. Let the Bible teach you the truth. There are people that cherry pick through the scriptures to find vague scripture that they can twist to their beliefs. And then spend their life twisting and explaining away the scriptures that are clear and detailed. Take the Bible as a whole and key on the detailed specific scriptures.

Choose a modern Study Bible that is easy to read.....NASB...NIV....ESV etc.

Some people recommend reading the Bible from cover to cover, and you should. But if you are new to biblical study start with the New Testament and read those Old Testament scriptures referenced in the New Testament. And then go back and read the Old Testament. Just a suggestion.

Of course anyone that is serious about Christianity should be going to church and be involved with the Christian community. Worshipping the Lord with others is inspiring and church is a good place to discuss scriptures. And fellowship is a blessing.

God Bless

You're post seemed to tell me I must do good things and get baptized in order to get into heaven....Did you really mean that?

John 3:16 says....“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life....

Of course! How could it be any other way. Like I said, you need to let the Bible teach you. Take the Bible as a whole.
Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? Luke 6:46
Yeshua and the Apostles tell us what to do to be saved and they tell us how to apply Christianity to our lives.
Good Deeds
Read about the Sheep and the Goats Matthew 25:31-46 Those that did not help one another went to Hell.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. James 2:6 When the Apostles are talking about good works they are talking about Good Deeds not observing the Mosaic Law.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, Hebrew 10:24

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16

And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful. Titus 3:14

That the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2nd Timothy 3:17

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 1st Timothy 6:18

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10

The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. Titus 3:8

Bottom line Good Deeds do not save us but the lack of Good Deeds can send you to Hell. So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; Philippians 2:12

Salvation produces good works...good works do not produce salvation.

Read my post, I said that.
Also gave the scriptures that if you want to go to Heaven Good Deeds are required.
There is a lot to the beginning of salvation.....But the Christian life is a journey.....workout your salvation with fear and trembling.....What saves you, that is do what Yeshua and the Apostles says ie Acts 2:38 But what can derail salvation? .....You can sin your way to Hell and if you do not help others you can go to Hell. Read the scriptures. I can re-post them.....You can read the scriptures in my post and if you want more I can post some more.

That's "works salvation" through the back door.

Being born again in Christ is what makes the difference, not how you grade your behavior.

Much love!

John 3:16 says....“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life....

General statements like that leaves a lot of the details out.....A lot, I mean a lot of scriptures clarify what it takes to get to Heaven. Like I said when you go to the Bible to study, let it teach you. There are verses if they were all that were in the scriptures would lead people to think that belief is all that is required to get to Heaven. To build a religious belief on that you have to ignore a good part of the New Testament You have to ignore the storyline the general foundation of Christianity. Christianity is a religion of morals and action. Where would we be if the Apostles just believed and stayed home and did nothing?

When I debate people that believe that faith or belief is all you need to get to Heaven....they hate scriptures because they prove them wrong and cause them to spend their life tap dancing and attempt to explain away a lot of scriptures. I have read on this forum that using scriptures is a form of bullying.

The truth, the scriptures say the truth specifically in detail. I can make a statement and post a scripture that says what I stated. The truth wins all the time.

No need to repost them. You're wrong.

In fact if you are depending on your works to get you into heaven...you're not going there. It's Jesus only.
Would you like to meet the real Jesus?

No I am right. What happened to the people in the story of the Sheep and the Goats?
Your not just saying that I am wrong, you are saying the scriptures I posted are wrong. Your argument is not with me, it is with God. Good luck on that one.

How are you going to explain away all the scripture when you are standing in front of Yeshua on judgment day?
It's not like you did not know.

Simply do what the scriptures say to do. I am not adding anything extra.
You didn't answer the question....you avoided it.

Let me ask it again....how much work do you need to do in order to make it into heaven?

Does working at my job count? Does working on my car count? Does doing good thinks like adopting a dog count?

Working at your Job? LOL
I gave you and honest answer......read the scriptures and do what they say. Why would I add anything to it.
If you run a crossed someone that needs help, help them.
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:14-17

I can tell you what I do, but it is not scripture. I had charity taken out of my paycheck.....I give to the church....to the food bank....and if I run a crossed someone that needs help I help them. My son told me of a young lady that two young children and she was going to the east coast and she had bad brakes and tires. So I had my son take her down to Plaza Tire and had her brakes replaced and new set of tires.
Again this is not scripture and does not guarantee you go to Heaven, it just an example of charity work.

How do you "get to heaven"?

As John Prine said....your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore..

This act or acts of helping someone saves you????

I am going say this again......Yeshua saves you.....better worded give you the opportunity to be saved.
Let us put this in motion....

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them John 6:55

When you come out of the water you are a new person, nothing you did or sinned is remembered by God........
sinless. From there you start your Christian life. That is why the scriptures say to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. But from there you can sin your way to Hell and if you do not help people you can go to Hell. Your sins are between you and Yeshua. Then again if you ask forgiveness Yeshua will forgive you.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1st John 1:9 Just do not play Yeshua for a fool. Repent and learn your lesson.

Christianity is a life style.....not like signing up for a book club and never check out a book. Everything you do will be held accountable for, both good and bad.
But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. Matthew 12:36
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 2nd Corinthians 5:10

One of the big misunderstandings is that once you are saved, it is a guarantee that you are going to Heaven, no matter how much you sin. How much evil do you think is going to be in Heaven? They call that Once Saved Always Saved and it is a false belief and non-biblical.
