Hello to you, I have enlarged the text from John 18 onward to the end of the chapter. This is the New international version of the Bible. Jesus Arrested

18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.

2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”

5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cupthe Father has given me?”

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.

Peter’s First Denial

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard, 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.

The High Priest Questions Jesus
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face.“Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?” 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.

Jesus Before Pilate
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

Reflecting on the time of our Lord and savior as he began almost 40 hours of illegal interrogation and torture …..For us ….for the sins of the world….. for our redemption.

The pic below is a more realistic depiction of what Jesus may have looked like...

The other thing that caught my eye was the timeline noted of Peters denials. The first one is accurate the other two in John _ 18:25-27 which are labeled second and 3rd are actually #5 and 6.

It’s not that big of a deal …but thanks to harmony of the gospels which has schooled us in this thinking…. we were taught it was three denials… and since we tend to see what we believe….. we have rolled with the three….. And there was three …and then there was three more…according to the Word.

Jesus did suffer a brutal death, the wrath of mankind was put upon Him, by these things that happen. One could say he took on the sin of the world upon him during this time. Amazing that, even though this terrible happened, he was resurrected from the dead, and had eventually overcome all of his enemies and became the Lord God Almighty.

Jesus suffered temptations of the flesh like all of us do, and he by his free will choice decided to freely serve God and do his will, in which lead to the whole world being reconciled back unto God.

One thing I always think when I read this passage Matt is that if Jesus told me I was going to deny him three times, I would have said yes sir! I would not have debated with him, especially if I had just a partial knowledge (which is true by the way) of Peter's knowledge of him.

Maybe my wires are "different", but I found this curious: John, the fisherman from Peter and Andrew's old neighborhood, was known in the household of the High Priest in Jerusalem and comfortably able to just walk in.

It always seemed to me that Peter made good on his impetuous promise that he was ready to die for Jesus. In modern terms, a Lieutenant approaches with a squad of armed marines and you charge the Lieutenant with a pistol ... you are not walking away from that encounter. Jesus saved Peter's life and made it quite clear that this arrest was God's plan and Christ's choice ... but the man that was about to be terrified of a teenage servant girl WAS prepared to die defending his Messiah (deeds not words) ... even if Peter never seemed to have the best sense of timing.

Which part in particular are you looking th emost for? There are several "plot" lines in this chapter.

Please feel free to comment however you see fit. It would be useful to note at least which verses you are commenting on to help others go and look also to think about what some of the insights you may share are.

You know that is another good reason to commend the first century Christians, who suffered severe persecution, along with suffering greatly for Christ in his name. All of the Apostles died at some point or another for the Lord, John was said to live and die of natural causes. Perhaps he was taken away when Jesus had came back ya know? Not so sure when all of them had even died, except for the recorded parts about Stephen, and James passed away sometime too, *maybe in Acts.

It also goes to show how as Christians being followers of Christ should die to ourselves, and live to God. Pick up the cross and deny yourself, and follow me is what Yeshua did state. Yeshua did save Peters life you are right, even though he denied three times, he continued pressing forward doing the will of God, in the name of Christ to spread the good news gospel until the time of the end.

It's actions by and through the spirit, having love for God to have love for others while living here now. And Peter, and the Apostles, went through a lot and suffered and had died. There is so much to learn from the Bible that it is almost endless.

Well it is hard for me because there are many threads in this chapter that can be expounded on well.

My favorite is Peters denial, coupled with John 20 where Peter is fully forgiven. Quite simply it is a perfect example of how God does not treat us as we desrve but has mercy on His children. also even something as huge as a public denial of Jesus does not take away the call of God on a persons life!

You know Robert, when Jesus was with this disciples, he spoke never to them in a Parable from what I understand but when he was around crowds, or pharisees, or scribes, or neighbor country he would always speak to them in a parable.

While they were on their journey near the Lord and helping along the way as he made his trips through the towns, even gentile towns, he visited healing all kinds of people who believed he could do so. He healed them and made them well, and today Jesus is the one who (restores the soul by the washing of the word). The soul from my understanding is the mind/will/emotion of any individual.

I would have probably been on of the people in the crowds, that came in but then left Jesus, all the apostles did leave Jesus at one point. He was also hated by others. Deeply envied. He had no beauty from Isaiah says about the Son of God. He made himself of no reputation. There are so many interesting things that the Lord had done, and I would have been one to walk away in the crowds most likely, Robert.

Thank you for sharing what you believe you would do in a situation like that.

In a way I was joking Matt, true I most likely would have been one of those too, but Peter who had just spent over three years and knew Jesus intimately questioned his accuracy, what was he thinking. Jesus is able to read hearts, and of course once again he was totally accurate in what he said, Peter knew it, and sadly had to experience that literally. Imagine the stress level that night, I fully understand why they denied him, but of course the denial was only temporary. If I remember correctly, every one of them was martyred.

I don't remember the details, but I seem to recall John being a troublemaker and refusing to die when they tried to kill him ... so they banished him to the Island of Patmos for the rest of his life (or something close to that).

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

This chapter is to be taken literally, is straightforward and so it's an historical account of the event, though missinging a few details in other accounts.
It was God's precise PLAN before it happened, before the foundation of the world and Jesus knew exactly what was going to take place. He was not a victim, He was captured and taken willingly, laying down His life for the cause.
At the Last Supper, Jesus told Judas to do his treacherous deed and foresaw the entire event. Satan entered Judas and Judas followed the plan perfectly. The Pharisees did not take Jesus while He was in Jerusalem, at the Temple, in daylight and had many opportunities to do so. But they feared if they did, there might be a riot; so they planned to capture Him during the night, in the hour of darkness when crowds would be home. Still, they went furnished with a cohort of Roman guards, hundreds, with torches in the moonlight, to make sure there would be no escape, resistance or riot. They were aware of Jesus miracles and massive crowds that sometimes accompanied him. Maybe they thought there might be hundreds camped out with Jesus - so they came prepared. But there wasn't, only the disciples. Judas led the small army to Jesus. Jesus was waiting and asked, "Who do you seek?" Why did He ask? He knew but wanted them to state exactly who the warrant for the arrest was for, to make it clear that His disciples were not included in the warrant, to insure their protection. "Jesus, the Nazareen", the commander responded.
" I AM He". They collapsed at the sound of the words.
Jesus' voice uttering the tetragramaton, "I Am", had power to cause them to collapse. Peter acted in fear not realizing this was Jesus purpose and chopped off the guard's ear. Jesus rebuked him and performed yet another miracle.
Peter was brave at that point to attack and might I add that later on, the only one to enter into the area where Jesus was being held. Peter's denial of Jesus shows us that even after having witnessed God, His miracles and having a close relationship with Him for over 3 years, he still feared for his life and so disowned himself from Jesus and lied. The full gift of faith had not been given to Peter. He had not yet witnessed the death and resurrection nor was he filled with the Holy Spirit. So at the time, he was not sure what was beyond death and therefore afraid to follow Jesus. Would any of us knowing little about what faith is say, "YES, I am one of His followers... take me too and torture me ... hang me next to Him!" No. Only after His death and resurrection were they all willing to die for their beliefs. Their Faith, the conviction and certainty of eternal life was confirmed when they saw the risen Christ.

John 18:6
6 As soon then as He had said unto them, "I am He", they went backward, and fell to the ground.

KJV

Jesus declared to them GOD's sacred name, The I AM, proclaiming Himself as God.

My wife once a long time ago got invited to a Church where they played music for a long time before the preacher even came out and spoke. Then the preacher came out at the podium and immediately held out his arm and certain people among the congregation fell backward in the floor. The girl that invited my wife was one of those who fell, and her husband was telling her to get up.

Those type Churches call that event being 'slain in The Spirit'. So after hearing about it, I got my Bible out and did some research. The ONLY ones I found in God's Word that fell backwards because of The Word were the enemies of God!

That told me that 'slain in The Spirit' idea was a falsehood, and was NOT a sign of having The Holy Spirit!

Now if the believer had simply bowed to the ground in front of Christ, like God's prophets did when He spoke to them, then I would believe in some kind of idea like being 'humbled by The Holy Spirit', but definitely not falling backwards on the ground.

I don't remember the details, but I seem to recall John being a troublemaker and refusing to die when they tried to kill him ... so they banished him to the Island of Patmos for the rest of his life (or something close to that).

Thanks AT, for the information, it spurned me to do further research, looks like you are correct, that most likely John was not martyred, and apparently there is evidence to show the other 11 were. I do find that interesting because Paul once said: (Romans 6:3) . . .do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
No doubt I misunderstood the verse. Thanks for the help sir.

Interesting to note in these verses is the mention of Malchus. Found in all 4 gospels - Matthew 26:51, Mark 14:47, Luke 22:50–51, and John 18:10–1.

Apparently it was the last miracle that Jesus performed before his resurrection. [Luke 22:50-51] Perhaps this healing was recorded because Luke was a physician, IDK but it was significant because this servant of the high priest will always be remembered through biblical history.

8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
This relates to John 17:12
12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”

Jesus prayer to his Father re: removing this cup but according to God's will, can be found in Matt26:39, Mark 143:36 and Luke 22:42 but in John he says:
John 17:13 says:
13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

Another interesting thing was the meaning of Malchus' name. In Hebrew it means: My King, Kingdom or counselor. Perhaps that is why Jesus said: "Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” (when Peter cut off the servants ear)
