Per Old Testament history, the scribe was in charge of keeping God's written Word.
A little known fact of Old Testament history, is that foreigners of the land of Canaan served as Israel's scribes in charge of keeping God's written Word.
This has been one of the children of Israel's problems since ancient times, allowing pagans to take over their assigned duties from God. Some of the leftovers of the Canaanites would even become workers in the temple, and even priests of Israel. God made the requirement that only the Levites would serve as Israel's priests, and that no foreigner was to enter inside the temple.
1 Chron 2:55
55 And the families of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab.
KJV
These Kenites were not born of the children of Israel. They were a people who originated in the land of Canaan...
Gen 15:18-21
18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,
21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
KJV
There they are, the Kenites, originating right from among the very nations that God commanded the children of Israel to totally destroy when they came into the lands of Canaan.
Deut 20:16-18
16 But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:
18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.
KJV
The Kenites were good to the children of Israel when they migrated from Egypt, so maybe that's why they were spared. (1 Samuel 15:6)
And in Israel's later history about those Kenites...
Matt 2:3-5
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5 And they said unto him, "In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
KJV
Would the scribe in charge of keeping copies of God's written Word from generation to generation know the prophecy about the location of where Messiah would be born? Yes, and there it is above, revealing it with the chief priests to king Herod, a non-Israelite converted Jew of the seed of Esau made king over Israel by the Romans who held Israel in captivity then.
Matt 5:20
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
KJV
Why would Lord Jesus include the Kenite scribes in that rebuke about the need to exceed their righteousness? Was Lord Jesus giving us a warning about those crept in unawares?
Matt 7:28-29
28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at His doctrine:
29 For He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
KJV
Not as the scribes? What does that suggest how the scribes taught? With now understanding who those scribes (Kenites of the land of Canaan) actually were, I now have to assume that the scribes taught the 'letter', and not the Spirit of the Letter, that because God's Spirit did not give them to understand. Yet God still controlled them so His written Word would be kept from generation to generation.
The scribes of Israel kept prodding Lord Jesus all the way to His crucifixion...
Matthew 9 -- they claim Jesus blasphemed by healing a man of palsy and forgiving his sins.
In Matthew 12, they asked Jesus for a 'sign', begging proof of who He was claiming to be.
In Matthew 15, the scribes try to rebuke Jesus because His disciples did not obey their traditions.
In Matthew 20, Jesus revealed He must be 'betrayed' by the chief priests and scribes.
In Matthew 21, the chief priests and scribes are jealous at the people proclaiming Hosanna to the Son of David.
In Matthew 23, Jesus says the scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. That is a type of revelation. It is showing how His enemies were entrenched in care of God's law and used/abused it for their own benefit, lawyers.
Matthew 23, Jesus gives 7 Woes to the scribes and Pharisees against their false teachings.
Matthew 26, the scribes and Pharisees plot how they might arrest Jesus and kill Him.
And after Lord Jesus' future return, and during His future reign, look what it says about Canaanites then no longer being in the House of God (Zechariah 14:21).
