Ephesians 1:13-14, consider Acts chapter 2, a small room in Jerusalem, a handful of believers, still grieving, still confused, still not sure what to do next. And then the sound, like wind filling the whole house, tongues of fire resting on each one of them and they began to speak in languages they never learned, declaring the wonders of God. The promised Holy Spirit had come, the promise was kept and now Paul is telling these Gentile believers something staggering. That promised Spirit, the one the prophets wrote about, the one the whole nation waited for, is the seal that has been placed on you. You are not a footnote in God’s story, you are the fulfillment of a promise made centuries before you were born.
But Paul is not done, because in Ephesians 1:14, he reaches for another word and this is the word that should make your heart stop, he says the Holy Spirit is a down payment of our inheritance. The Greek word is arrabon and in the ancient world, that word meant something very specific, it was a commercial term, a legal term. When you bought a piece of property or a ship full of cargo, you did not pay the whole price on the spot, you paid a deposit, a first installment and that deposit was called the arrabon. And here is what made the arrabon so powerful, it was not just a promise to pay later, it was part of the payment itself, it was the first piece of the full amount given in advance as a guarantee that the rest was coming.
Consider how that worked in a real transaction, a man in Corinth wants to buy a farm outside the city, he does not have the full price and the seller does not know him. So the buyer hands over a portion of the money right there in front of witnesses and from that moment something changes, the seller cannot sell that land to anyone else. The deal is bound, the buyer walks away carrying a receipt and that receipt is not a hope, it is a claim, the full price is coming and the deposit proves it. That is what the Holy Spirit is, he is not a promise that something good might happen someday, he is the first installment of the inheritance itself already paid into your life, which means the question is not whether the inheritance is coming, the question is whether God keeps his promises and he does.
