Taken in context it is part of a wonderful song of praise by Moses because God defeated the Egyptian army and Moses is seeing God as a warrior because he won the battle and rescued the Israelites from their enemies.
And it something all Christians need to remember because he is the same God today as he was then and will rescue us from our enemies and fight our battles.

The truth of the matter is, evil has to be subdued. So God is a man of war to accomplish that.
