In bible studies, one only need to read the scripture for what it says, we should not add to or take away from it. That being said let us explore the word of God.

In God’s word, New Testament, we find that he gives believers certain gifts. If one searches scripture for the word ‘gifts of (God and Spirit)’ they will find:

Gifts (Plural)

Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

1Co 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Heb 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Heb 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

Heb 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

Rom 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

To see the complete gifts (plural) given to believers, one only needs to read all of 1Co 12.

That is it for ‘gifts’ and even at that in Luk 11:13 it is that we as being human give gifts, but it only mentions one gift from God.

Now let us look at:

Gift (Singular)

Joh 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Act 8:20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

Act 11:17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

Rom 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1Co 7:7 For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

2Co 9:15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Eph 3:7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

2Ti 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

1Pe 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

I would like to point out the scriptures above that specifically state what the ‘gift’ is:

Joh 4:10 Living water

Rom 6:23 Eternal life

Eph 2:8 by grace are ye saved

In conclusion, one can see that in the new testament the gift of God speaks of life and the gifts of God speak of his power given to believers.

Rom 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

I list the above because it also refers to the gift, singular.

There are only three more scriptures on gift, but these would certainly lead to another study.

Act 2:38
Act 10:45
Heb 6:4
