Understanding Godly and Ungodly Bonds In Ministry
There are times when members of a Christian community can connect together spiritually through shared responsibilities. Particularly when in ministry. For example, a team of prayers who regularly intercede for people, for healing, or to break strongholds over an area. These spiritual connections can also happen when we worship together as part of a team in a church, a ministry, or an outreach.
Spiritual exchanges are normal as we endeavor to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading. Individuals need to be able to trust each other, working together to form one body, manifesting the various gifts imparted to each member by the Holy Spirit.
When believers serve together in ministry, something powerful happens in the spiritual realm. As we work side by side, pray together, and worship as one, the Holy Spirit knits our hearts in unity of purpose and love. These spiritual connections are designed by God to strengthen His body, the Church.
Ephesians 4:16 “From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love…”
While these connections can be holy and fruitful, they can also become distorted if we’re not spiritually guarded. Understanding how to maintain pure, Spirit-led connections is vital for every ministry team.
1. The Worship Team And Intercessors
The worship team is often in the front lines of an unseen spiritual battle. Worship disrupts and dispels darkness; it invites God’s presence and leads believers into a place of a one-on-one spiritual encounter with God. Satan hates the worship of God, so the team can often be a target for spiritual attack. This calls for intercessors praying for them while they are open and vulnerable at the front, ministering to others.Wise leaders will ensure that prayers are sprinkled within the congregation or are in a side room, interceding before, during, and after their time ministering upfront.
Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood…”
Consistent intercessory prayer cover helps protect hearts and brings unity and focus. Prayer shields against burnout, offense, and spiritual heaviness. Every Leader, musician, and worshiper needs prayer cover by members of the body while they are ministering up front. (1Thessalonians 5:25).
2. Opening Our Hearts Before God And Man
Serving together requires openness and trust. When we open our hearts to one another in service, we allow God’s love to flow freely.
James 5:16 “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”
Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”
Authenticity builds healthy connection and unity. The Holy Spirit moves most freely where there is humility and transparency. Openness must always be rooted in love and wisdom, not emotional dependency or soulish wants and desires.
3. The Dangers of Being Vulnerable: Dropping Into Your Soul
While openness builds trust, unguarded vulnerability can open doors for soulish entanglements and emotional attachments that move beyond healthy fellowship. To stay healthy, stay in your spirit and do not drop into your soul. You can tell when you have dropped into the soul because of thoughts that are attacking your mind and emotions. Thoughts that should not be functioning while fully surrendered to God.
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Our souls (mind, will, heart, and emotions) can easily form unhealthy attachments that were never meant to place us into spiritual bondage. Compassion and ministry closeness can sometimes blur boundary lines, which is why it is so important to understand these spiritual principles, accepting them as a part of the spiritual dynamics of team ministry. Yet also being able to release those connections once the ministry's outcomes have been achieved. We must learn to minister from the overflow of the Holy Spirit. Stay grounded in prayer and personal time with God; minister from intimacy with Him, not from unmet emotional needs.
* Remember, as individual members in Christ, we need to take responsibility for our own actions to ensure that we are walking with integrity. Don't blame others for your bad decisions and choices. Accept the part you played, repent, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward. God knows our hearts and nothing is hidden in his sight.
4. Understanding Godly Connections vs. Ungodly Soul Ties
Not every connection is healthy or Spirit-led. Godly connections unite us for kingdom purpose; ungodly soul ties can drain, confuse, and entangle.Godly connections:
Healthy Spirit-led connections are built through love, unity, and mutual submission (Colossians 3:14). They are empowered by the Holy Spirit for ministry and growth and bring peace, freedom, and clarity.
Ungodly connections (or ungodly soul ties):
Ungodly connections are rooted in control, manipulation, jealousy, or emotional dependency.
They can produce confusion, guilt, or unhealthy attachments, particularly when a member is going through a difficult time or is struggling with sin. Such connections distract from God’s voice and can create divisions.
1 Corinthians 15:33 “Bad company corrupts good character.”
Discernment Is Necessary Here:
Ask the Holy Spirit, “Is this connection strengthening my walk with Christ or taking me off on another path?”
Spiritual connections are a gift from God when they remain centered on Him. They bring strength, unity, and supernatural flow in ministry. But without discernment and prayer, they can shift from godly partnership to unhealthy attachments.
Romans 12:9 “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.”
John 13:35 “By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
A Word In Season:
Stay rooted in Christ; He must remain the center of every connection. Keep relationships in the light (hide nothing); be open, accountable, and covered through prayer. Allow the Holy Spirit to knit hearts for his purpose and prune anything that is not from God. Be rooted in love and wisdom, not emotional dependency, neediness, or want.
