For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

What's the difference between godly sorrow and sorrow of the world? Repentance unto salvation.

Godly sorrow is from the heart to repent of doing such things.

Sorrow of the world is just 'feeling sorrow' for what we've done, but without repentance. We're only sorry about the results, not the deed.

Esau was very sorry for selling his birthright, but unrepentant. He only wanted back what he had thrown away, without repenting of the sin itself.

How does feeling sorry only work death? It may work to soothe the conscience, but doesn't work with God unto forgiveness and life. It's still working death by continued unrepented sinning.

Some battered spouses accept feeling sorry about it for a time, with some longer or shorter than others. But with the righteous Lord and God of the Bible, it doesn't work even once with Him. Nothing less that His godly sorrow from the heart with repentance can receive His forgiveness, salvation, and life.
