I haven't personally but was quite close a few times when an itinerant Pastor used to preach at our Church in monotone. My mom however, used to fall off to sleep in her Church often. In fact, we watched a video of her Church service once and the videographer caught her on camera...she still maintains that she was praying... Lol!

What I think is a common occurrence is not so much nodding of but the minds of the adherents tend to wander as they struggle to maintain concentration as they slip into passivity.

Luther insisted that infants be at worship services with their parents so for the 500 years my familys has
been lutheran all of us has been known to fall asleep in church

Their are people in my chruch who sometimes fall asleep I almost did a few times when sick or very sleepy.
