I always understood this passage as immediately, meaning, once you die, you will be judged.

I always understood this passage as immediately, meaning, once you die, you will be judged.

That could be true if man has an immortal soul which goes to heaven or hell at death, but I believe that man returns to the dust Genesis 3:19 and only some people await the resurrection at the return of Jesus. When Jesus appears he will raise only some people who are responsible to judgement, and grant the faithful everlasting life in the Kingdom of God on earth for the 1000 years. The unfaithful will be judged and after a period of time suffer the second death and return to the dust.

2 Timothy 4:1,6-8 (KJV): 1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Daniel 12:1-3 (KJV): 1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

God's Word shows there are many judgments.

It appears you are thinking the word 'judgment' in The Bible always means the FINAL Judgement of being cast into the future "lake of fire", called the "second death" in Revelation 20.

Christ separating His sheep from the goats on the day of His future coming is a type of judgment.

Christ Jesus handing out the rewards to His faithful saints at His coming is a type of judgment. So a judgment per God's Word can also be a good thing. One simply has to realize the Biblical context.

All those who erred during this present world standing in judgment per Ezekiel 44 and being taught the difference between the holy and the profane, and clean and unclean, during Christ's future "thousand years" reign with His elect is a type of judgment, just not into the "lake of fire".

The event once Satan is loosed from his pit prison after... Christ's future "thousand years" reign, when Satan will tempt all the unsaved nations to go up against the "camp of the saints" on earth, and God then brings His fire upon them to destroy them, is a type of judgment, but not the final Great White Throne Judgment to the "lake of fire" that happens immediately after that.

The faithful will be given everlasting life in the Kingdom of God upon the earth and the wicked will be rejected and suffer the Second Death. So Hebrews 9:27 is speaking about this Judgement Seat, not what will occur at the end of the 1000 years. Hebrews 9:27 does not speak about a different judgement that sends immortal souls to heaven and hell at death. This is Pagan mythology or Greek philosophy.

I know many assign taboo to the word 'judgment' like it is always associated with punishment, etc., but that's simply not true. There are both good judgments and punishing judgments in God's Word. And Christ handing out rewards to His saints at His coming, like the white robes and crowns, come from the Matthew 25 judgment of separation of His sheep from the goats when He returns.

Great question!

I think-in a condensed explanation-that that this scripture is referring to two deaths that some will undergo. The first is a physical death due to the inherited sin from Adam (Roman 5:12); and, the second means a permanent death, without hope of another resurrection.

Consider John 5:26-30 and Acts 24:15. All will be given the opportunity to gain eternal life. However, gaining a favorable judgment will require that persons repent and turnaround from their former evil ways.-Acts 3:19; 17:30, 31.

Those who do not repent; or, continue to sin, rebel and are unwilling to bring their lives into conformity with God’s righteous standards after the 1,000 year reign of Jesus, will undergo this second “judgment” and death.-Revelation. 20:14.
